You will need a straight 12V coil. Not one stamped "use with resistor".
The coil you have, should be GT40 "R" (for resistor) and wont suit.
You will have to supply 12V to your new coil, the standard wire to your coil will have a resistor built in, so you will need to run a new unresisted wire from your ignition switch.
Good luck!

Are you supplying 12V to it or is it hooked up to the original wiring?

Possibly the only thing might be the coil would run hotter?
I had an instance where a resisted (9V) coil was used on a 12V points ignition and after a few weeks the points wiper that runs on the cam in the dissy would melt and the points would close. It took a couple of sets of points to get to the bottom of this issue.
Obviously electronic wont have this issue but the module might suffer?
It would be interesting to learn what your hi-tension (spark plug) voltage is?

Just to answer your original question nibbsy, the part number for the coil normally used with electronic dizzy's (HEI systems) is HEC-716 (Bosch coil).
I believe this is the same coil used on both 6's and 8's too. It's a very common coil.
