Which one is better, is it true that the macpherson strut was only adopted as the standard front suspension because it cost alot less to design/produce?
Or do they perform better?

Each system has it's own pro's and con's in general from a production stand point Mcpherseon is lighter and therefor better but double a arm is stronger and technically more adjustable in short from my understanding.
