Gday guys.

The tacho in my LJ's dash doesn't work. I've checked and rechecked the wiring, and it was all good.

I think (it's been ages since I last saw it go...) that on ignition, the needle would swing around completely until it hit the stop, and stay there.

Any idea what could be wrong with it?

And, unless I'll be able to fix it myself, can anyone recommend me a place in Adelaide to get it fixed?

Tim

With it swinging straight up it sounds like you have either a bad or no earth or the power supply on the wrong clip, thats what was wrong with mine we had a bad earth.

That's what we all though initially, too, but we checked all the wiring, and it was all as the wiring diagram told us...

Yeah, but I don't think the old 173 would like sitting above 7000rpm much...

Did you try to start it with a near flat battery, that can give low volts and high current not good for tacho"s .After that mine never worked properly again.

I had my tacho rebuild by a company over here who specialize in VDO instruments. Out of all the other factory tachos I have seen, mine is the smoothest and least bouncy.

Its probably too far away from you but heres the details anyways

I had the same issue with my factory tacho, as soon as the ignition went on the tacho went to 7K. The part in the back of the tacho is 'burnt out' and has to be replaced to get it working. I took mine to Ringwood Speedometer in Melbourne, quick and easy to fix for $110. Again, this may be too far away.

It's all good, limo has a spare that he's donated to me :D

I might get the one I have now fixed one day, just as a spare.

Sorry to steal your thread Tim

I've been meaning to ask this same question for ages, as the Tacho in my SS shoots strait to redline with the ignition on, and sits about 2000rpm higher than what its actually doing once engine is running.

Does anyone know of a good repairer on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane??
(Or does anyone have a spare Orange needle tacho they dont need anymore?)

cheers

Matt
