I've read the sticky on coolant etc. and was wondering which type /brand people here would recommend/not recommend for their motors. It seems important to have an additive which is corrosion inhibiting as well as lubricate the water pump.
So many choices at Auto Pro don't know which one to get????

Lubricate the water pump LOL what a gimmick, the pump runs a sealed bearing.

I use Castrol corrosion inhibitor. Comes in small cans and is a concentrate. I use 2 cans on my cars. I dont use antifreeze/boil as I don't go to the snow and my cooling systems work.

With the lubrication thing, all it lubricates is the seal and most water pump seals these days are carbon/ceramic and self lubricate.

Toyota long :spoton: life coolant is the ducks guts pretty expensive but from experience my 80 series landcruiser at 250000 ks changed coolant and bottom neck of water pump looked like new you wont have to worry about corroded timeing covers or inlet manifolds with this coolant

Check which standards the coolant satisfies. Last time I looked there were quite a few brands that did not meet the Holden's specifications for the VZ. Nulon meets or exceeds the Holden specifications. I would not run pure water in anything.

Nulon

I was looking at a late model echo the other day and found the service interval for changing coolant at well over 100 000 ks (cant remember exactly). I think it is called super long life and is fluro pink in colour. It is supposed to be the new improved and a step up from the already excellent(as fatslr knows)red long life.

Aren't there different types depending on whether the majority of the block/head internals being cooled are aluminium or cast iron?

THe holden coolant i use is alloy compatible ( used in the alloy LS1s) and also good for iron blocks.

I ran it for 12 months on the old motor ( Straight! No dilution which probably wasnt right) but there was N O corrosion whatsoever.

Chris...if its straight water and nothing else..it wont stay straight water for long...it turns a lovely rusty colour...when that boils it creates a lovely mud that hides at the back of the block...when bits of the "hot rocks" break off they lodge in the tubes of your radiator.

I am currently cursing one of my engines previous owners...and its not the one before me...but all before Tuff will earn a nasty memo!

Lots of great suggestions here. Also received other info on the subject Thanks
Not quite as confused now. Will go for an anti freeze/ anti boil inhibitor combo. Heaps of advantages over just an inhibitor.

i see your point but my radiator water gets dropped atleast once every couple months. and with all the continual things we do to the car, its cheaper and easier on the lawn to just use water.

i run coolant in all of our late model cars, just dont bother with the torry.
