This is just a general question and one i am unsure of the answer and with cars now getting tatslotto money and people paying top $$$ for what they believe is authentic car and sellers who say their car is authentic and now repro tags that almost look identical i would like to ask a question as i am in the market for a xu1 and i dont want to get a dud .The question i really would like an answer on.
Are all 2/3 tags that are punched out by a old typwriter for Holden use the same fonts on all 3 tags and the same machine and numbers ? or are the vin tags done on one machine and paint etc on another ?if they are different fonts is this a way to spot repro ones or dodgy ones ?
My question is not aimed at anyone or car but i believe is a valid question and may help other punters in search of any xu1 .What i believe if all fonts are different then you have a suspect car ?? correct me if i am wrong but please just an honest answer cheers Dazza

body tags general question for the gurus

i think this will be a very hard one to get a concrete answer on when you look at the time in history and think about the fact that most engine blocks were stamped by an apprentice with a letter punch set and hammer

good question dazza and i understand your concern..
as the repo tags are starting to pop up.I have only seen
the repo vin tags to date..adr tag has smaller stamping
compared to the vin tag but i guess they are also making
them as well..i reckon the tassie xu-1(on ebay now) has a repo vin
on it and its not done that well ..the 2 looks like a Z (82911..8z911)
its funny how every body jumped up and down when they heard
Harrisons in Qld was selling repo tags but when you ask the question
you asked you are greeted with silence...maybe Harrisons can answer
this????

I too find this an interesting question and subject as I have been involved with collectables for some time, and ultamately someone will produce a copy of an original, and as technology advances the reproduction gets better and better to a point where even the original looks fake because the repro is just so good and the original was probably flawed to start with.
With many collectables, not using the same material as the original is a dead givaway or in the case of tags using the wrong font/stamp. But how are we to know when the seller of such items is not being honest?
I think that the repro tag should not look like the genuine item, for example it would be easy enough to screen print the information onto a tag in whatever fancy font or colour and afix this to the car, the information maybe genuine the tag is obviously not. These should be the only tags available as replacement, repro etc, the rest should be illegal if not already. I worked for a manufacturer and part of my job was to create the VIN and ID tags, all the info was provided and then stamped on chassis and the tags, but they were licenced by the Transport Dept to do this and they were scrutenised.
I think the enthusiest has alot of control over these things and the more people who dont buy these cars the better. Buyer beware is very relevant, if the car is not all matching numbers, genuine, ridgie didge, dont part with the cash, if it looks suss keep walking.

I think a law should be passed for the repro tags to include the manufactures name and the date of production to protect peoples interests because anything else is fraud.

Thats good to hear that it wasnt that close but the one on ebay recently which sold for good coin which i have pics of all 3 tags was certainly a excellent copy of the original and the only obvious thing about the repro tag was that it was shinny and the others were old and the font was slightly different on real close inspection to the other tags. If he wanted to disguise it further he could leave it outside and planted a few roses around it for a few months and i am sure it would just look like the other tags . Also it would be hard to pick if all 3 tags were on the car in different locations on the vehicle as close inspection cant be done at the same time if the fonts were pretty close. If the repro tag is made from a damaged one i can live with that but as one member already said it can have who made it and date on it so no unsuspecting punter gets caught and has a choice at what the car is worth to them. dazza
