Hi Guys, just wondering does the rear of the firewall need to be trimmed when fitted an injected motor onto an LX? The injected engine is actually a 253 block, I am wondering about different lengths due to dizzy and or injection and I am thinking the rear lip on the firewall might need to be trimmed??
Any info appreciated on this matter.

Cheers

Not sure about that but you will at least have to reshape or remove your heater box. Just incase you didn't already know that, I'm guessing you would.

Its Prob not a bad idea to remove all the lips in the engine bay while the engine is out. U can take off about 1-2inches on both sides and u can take off the rear lip as well. U might as well do it now to avoid the headaches of doing it later when u are trying to get the engine in. Is ur engine colour or just black, if its just black it will be a lot easier to just pressure pack it up, but if its colour u may need a lil bit more time and money lol.

Not sure bout the heater box, i have seen torrys b4 with injection with a heater box still there, maybe try and find some pics of a Torry Engine bay wtih njection for ideas!

Thanks 253, the engine bay is colour matched to the car with prismatec no less, quite a job to respray it all. But yeah thanks. Pity all that wasn't done by the previous owner when he first did the car, he thought of everything else including tunnel mod.

I need proper advice from somebody who has done the mods themselves :)

Do you also have to consider a Torrie type sump like you do with the HQ transplants?

the large capacity winged sump I have now on my 253 also fits the 253 block on the injected model. No worries there. As a side note Bruce Ingram will be doing the basic engine swap and he pulls the engine out complete with it on the front end, just the way he prefers to do things.

If memory serves me right the VN-S injectiopn requires mods to the heater box. BUT VT Series 1 5.0L fuel rail is different, dont know why but I can somehow vaguely remember being told VT 5.0L rails dont need any mods to clear, you can run the heater box with ease.

Ring a few conversion mobs and see what they say about the VT rails.

Thanks LS1LX I agree I need to talk to people who do these conversions. I have been told the fuel rail will need a mod, not sure exactly what yet. I am hoping to get away with the heater box intact after all the heads are no further apart. I am unsure if the injection gear gets in the way or not.

The 308 and 253 blocks are exactly the same size externally, so only probs should be with the sump, injection plumbing, wiring, etc. They run core packs so can't see a problem with distributor, the old VK dizzies do come awfully close to the drip sill.

Agreed Yella, thats why I am thinking I might not need to modify the heater box. The part I am unclear about is the injection plumbing. Maybe thats the cause of the mods. Time will tell and it will no doubt be sorted no matter what.

I can't see much of a prob with the dissy since i'm using the large cap on my HEI and you can pull it out without any probs its just real close to the lip.

Thanks jewboy if you read above you will have seen the real concern I have. (injector plumbing)
And that is what I am looking for clarification of, the rest has been sorted with various discussions.

just a quick question, is this 253 already assembled with the VN heads and injection or have you got all the parts and going to assemble it?
just curious because I was pretty sure that the valves on VN heads hit the block because of the smaller bore? I suppose you could fly cut the block for clearence.....

Hi Makka, this engine is assembled and running fine. The guy has done the hard yards.
I am still looking for a spark control module (trigger or injection igniter as I have heard it called) Most of the other bits and pieces have been sourced and are hopefully on their way down to me or are being priced. There must be something I have forgotten but thats fine lol.

Gday herne

Ill send those manifolds up in the next few days.. You only need to mod the heater box if running VN,VP or VR EFI with the VS fuel rail its actualy about 3inchs shorter then the other 3.. Im asuming VT is the same as VS.. I know this cos i mesured my Bro in laws VN SS and my motor wich is a VS ute motor..

Hi John, thanks for that, it's the exact answer I was looking for. Perfect :)

Looking forward to the manifolds, did you do any good with the MAP?

If you end up with the early, longer fuel rail, DONT modify the heater box, I have shortened them before.

Thanks Struggler, believe me modding the heater box was only going to be the very last resort :) I would have talked to as many mechanics as possible before I butchered the box. :)

Still can't get hold of a Spark Control Module aka trigger or injector igniter as some call it.

Can anyone here on the forum help find me a 'used' but working Spark Control Module anywhere? I have priced a brand new one from GMH and nearly had a heart attack!

It's a small finned box about 3" long with a couple of wires for connections - thats the best description I have and it normally sits on the firewall I believe.

Herne those boxes are the 1st thing to go on those engines, 99% of the EFI 5.0L's have had them replaced at some stage in there life, just buy a new one and at least it will last 5 years.

ToranaSS it must of been you that mentioned it on the old forums about the VS rails, I knew I read it somewhere on these forums. Good find.

Yella EFI Holden V8's still ran a Distributor and coil, it was just electronic.
