Hi all was trying to refit the rubber gromet that goes on the end of the steering column to the plate that bolts to the fire wall.

I am having difficulty in getting it fitted again after removing it to recon the column and plate etc.

The rubber I have is in good condition and I don't want to damage it as they are not currently available (know Rare's are going to remake soon though).

I was wondering if there is there is some trick to fitting it. I assume it is fitted to the colum first because of the bit that goes into the hole in the column tube, then the plate it fitted to the rubber on the column?

Any help suggestions would greatly appreciated.

Well I can think off only 2 ways to do it as I'm about to do same thing.

1. Place grommet in firewall and feed column in at its inclined angle( same as mounted position, or
2. Place grommet on column first and place column horizontal position allowing lower side of grommet to slip in hole. As you start to lift column at steering wheel end carefully slide/push grommet through hole working you way up.

Both ways may need WD40 to make column slide or grommet push throught easier.
The large hole where the grommet keys into the column should be in the 7 oclock position(when looking from inside car). MY grommet has a slip at the 11-12 oclock position.
Hope this helps.
If anyone else has more ideas, where listening.

I have found it easiest to fit the grommet to the firewall plate, slide in the column (with some sort of lube) and ensure the locating knob is in the appropriate hole, fit column with plate to car.

Thanks fuzzypumper & Struggler for the feedback, will have a go on the weekend at fitting the plate to the column as suggested. Yet to get shell painted so won't be fitting complete assembly into the car yet but will try fitting the plate to the column.

Cheers Guys

Try rubber grease as a lubricant as WD40 probably will attack the rubber over time.

Maybe KY ?? :spoton:

I fitted the rubber onto the column...then sprayed it with Silicone Spray and pushed it in with a long socket handle or similiar..the SS allowed it to just slide in place. Was a shit fight before that without it.
