hi all, i have two black hatckback consoles. i need to paint one brown to go into my ss, first question is what paint do i use and 2nd question is one console has a ash tray in the rear and does not. what one would suit my 9/77 ss hatchback

I have 3 here & they all have the ashtray in the back, 1 of which was in my hatch when purchased.

I think the best bet for painting would be plastic primer then 2K.

Your SS has a black one mate, even though the rest of the interior is brown.
That's the combo with your car.
Your SS had ashtray in rear of console also.
Trust me on this one....
The paint to use is satin black interior vinyl paint.
Key is to clean with detergent and water, not solvents or other cleaners,
and then rinse with clean water and allow to r e a l l y dry.
(most scum and grit is water based.) Silver paint pen to finish any chrome detail.
Do the arm rest, even if new vinyl, with same vinyl paint so as to match it in.

might i suggest that before painting it a swap with someone that has the right colour be tried.
one day there wont be any unpainted ones left.

the consoles without the ashtray are from LX Sunbirds.
they had the ashtrays still in the doors.

I believe the early model SS hatchbacks had ashtrays in the rear arm rests and the later model hatches had an ashtray in the back of the console.

LX Sunbird consoles are different around the shifter, well in a manual anyway. Consoles with ashtrays are the later typethe consoles without the ashtray are from LX Sunbirds.
