Im am putting a 308 in my LC so I have moved the steering column over and added the lx unis. The problem I have is that the metal cover over the column shaft (in the engine bay) has about 20mm of up and down play. ie the cover is sliding down and is now rubbing on the uni. I can push it back up but it just works its way back down.

My question is- should there be any bolts the hold this or the column shaft in place? From what I can see the top of the shaft is connected to the steering wheel and the bottom to the uni. The reason I ask is that I dont remember what I un did when I pulled it out as it was months and months ago. Looking on the shaft cover there is a hole there that looks like something goes into it. The thing is I can see anything in the shaft that lines up with this hole.

I have probably confused you with the description as its been a few months since I was susing it out and I had a number of problems. I should probably have another look at it tonight to job my memory.

Sounds like the shaft may have collapsed, plastic pins in it if I remember correctly, when it does that you can push the bottom half of the shalf all the way up or all the way down of the top half of the shaft.

Is the U shaped bracket still screwed into the bottom of the outer column tube? (that is meant to stop the tubes from moving)

Is this what you meant?

This was what happened to mine when the pins broke in the column shaft.

yep - that is the problem i have!!

so is it a easy fix? what is this U shaped bracket?

see that hole in the outer sleeve - is that meant to be empty? or should a bolt/locator stud be in there?

cheers

The hole is meant to be empty, they have some sort of packing in there. The U shaped type bracket is above the plate that bolts to the floor on the outer column tube,it can wear & cause the two tubes to move a little,it is held in by two small bolts.

It looks like the same thing that happened with mine, the pins in the shaft broke & it has pushed up.

Most peple just pull the shaft down & leave it that way till it happens again or they pull it all apart, pull the bottom half of the shaft down & tack weld it in place(not advisable but it is what people told me that they did).

I ended up getting a replacement shaft as on mine where the cotter pin for the uni joint bolted onto the slot in the bottom of the shaft was worn I ended up finding a replacement shaft for $50.They are getting hard to find, not cheap either.

hmm i see. i have a LJ column shift column around somewhere - are they the same as LC?

if i leave it the way it is - can it foul with the uni and jamb it up or anything?

would be quite scarey if it was to jamb :S

Main differences that I can think of between lc & lj columns are the blinker assemblie & the lj shaft has a different spline on it for the different steering wheels other than that they bolt up the same.

I only drove mine a short distance & hated how much noticeable play there was so I changed it,one lh universal joint was worn out too.
