is anyone aware of a ballpark figure for getting our red6 flywheel lightened?
what is the theory of how light it should be before tourqe is lost. my motor is pretty mild. i'm going a slightly bigger cam(28/68) and just want it to revv up a bit quicker. is about 8.6kg good for this application?

i wouldent reccommend machining a standard holden six flywheel to lighten it.

if you wanna get a lightened flywheel, get a yella terra explosion proof lightened jobbie. if you dont want quiet that light, get a standard yella terra explosion proof and get that machined lighter.

you should never machine a standard flywheel to make it lighter. very very dangerous.

if you dont wanna shell out the bucks for the proper jobbie, then dont do it at all. my lil motor in the car now has a standard flywheel on it and it revs quiet nicley indeed.

cheers.

I arranged one recently for a forum member and asked the engine builder how much can you take off? He said .060". I think the gain would be hardly noticable. Cost to machine was $30 (I think? he picked it up and paid for it)
but to take .060" off was going to cost more.

^^^...This...for a very young man...speaks words of great wisdom....dont even think about anything except a yella unit.
Well said Bomber.

As mentioned 3 times now, DO NOT lighten a standard factory flywheel... They are prone to explode as lightening weakens them.

I work at exedy and have been speaking to our engineers about this and they said what the other guys have said DO NOT LIGHTEN a standard flywheel, that not designed for it. They all so said that its really a waste of time unless your balancing the whole engine, spend money on carby, extrators etc you will see more gains than lightening a flywheel.

I've done exhaust, carb, extractors, head, I need a new clutch kit and gearbox rebuild so i thought i may aswell just let it rev a bi quicker while I can. does anyone know what a proper lightened unit would be worth?

doesn't sound like it's worth the cash unless you got a real hot 6 eh?

Ya that was me...i mean, my 202 is pretty mild so i wasn't really in need of a super light flywheel, but i just wanted something slightly machined (for peace of mind i spose lol) and with a nice clean surface for my new clutch rather than one with grooves and heat/stress cracks from a clutch pad that looked like someone had taken a bite out of it (yes...there was a peice missing! And i was still driving it to work/uni!. (i have pics if interested, some people say they dont know how i was still driving it). But i can only compare performance to a rooted 173/3spd man but i think it seems to spin up nicely...once again cheers rob, helped me to get a flywheel that was perfect, just in time :spoton: . Makes for really smooth gearshifts, love it. Dont go too light, jsut a nice surface for the clutch should be fine

well if i'm getting a new clutch I may just get it machined. as brad1979uc said it would be bettter to have a smooth surface for the new clutch.
