Does any one know for sure if the VL steering racks are the same as VN?
And if so are the 6cyl and 8's the same????

The reason I ask is, I need to remove the power steer from my VN track car and I need to replace it with a NON power steer rack, Ihave been told that VL will fit ???

Do we have any steering guys that would know for sure, befor I go dissableing the car and buying lots of stuff that's not going to work. :spoton:
Cheers

Hi Guys.

Yes, that is correct. In the VN series there was a rare 'delete power steer' option & they simply used a VL manual rack.

VB to VK manual racks are different & will not fit.

Also this doesn't apply to p/st racks. A VL p/st rack will not fit a VN, but a VN rack will fit a VL.

Is that because they don't like the power steering or they don't like the quicker ratio of the power rack?

The faster ratio of the power rack actually suits me, (nothing quite like a fast action grind  )
But the reasons for removing it outway the keeps...

1. One more thing to drain power.

2. The pumps usually shit them self.

3. More room in the engine bay.

4. Don't really need it.

5. One less thing to go wrong.

I an always put it back if I want to :driving: Look out Ebay here I come.

Thanks For your help guys.......I love this site. :spoton:

One more thing..... is there a difference between VL 6 and 8 steering racks?

Have a look at page 2 of this thread. I "manualised" the p/steer rack on my VB Comm. race car. Took about 1/2 a day to do, no parts except rack boots. I still have the same ratio and works a treat :spoton:

Thanks for that..... Here is one for you I've been offered a Manual rack out of a

VK V8, I know you said they are different and i belive you too...... But this guy

reckons that VK V8 and VL V8 share the same crossmembers. This sounds like

something Holden would do. But from memory with the older Commodores if you

swaped the racks didn't you have to change the columb over aswell......
(Don't get old, it gets hard to remember stuff!!)

And Rodomo,

Thanks for that link, was interesting reading.... Definately food for thought. One question though.
Not knowing a hell of a lot abot power steering, this may or may not be a silly question, but here goes anyway.

Why pull the rack appart and modify it and remove the bits and pieces the way you described? Why not leave it all together and block off the inlet and outlet pipes? What advantage is there in modifing it like that, is there less friction thus making it a bit lighter??? :spoton:

Yep, to eliminate any un-necessary friction.

Did it work? The less friction bit I mean? Or do you now have arms like Poppey? :tease:

No issue, even with a small steering wheel, but I don't drive it in shopping centre car parks either.
And no, I'm not Popeye :tease:
