Howdy,

I picked up an early V8 VS Commodore starter motor on the weekend. I've trial fitted and it looks to fit ok. It does however have three connections (two nuts and a spade) whereas the standard red starter only has two (nut and spade). Can anyone who has done this change over on a red 308 tell me what wires connect to what? The spade is easy, just need to know which of the two nuts on the starter to hook up please.

Cheers,

Big T

Okey dokey, here are a few pics. Dopey me got my wires crossed (hahaha, another electrical joke.....*groan*).

There is only one big nut (as well as myself) but there are two spades. One the standard starter there is only one spade.

Pic should be self explanatory (hopefully).

Cheers,

T

Your battery cable goes to 30
Purple solenoid wire from ignition switch goes to 50

Have a look at this. It might give you an idea how these numbers work. You will see down the list the numbers as shown on the relay diagram.

Kind of a universal numbering system for Bosch at least.

Kudos to the bright spark (here we go), who put that together. I'm currently (oh no...) amped up (stop it!!) to get down to shed and get the starter started (oh my god...). I'm positve (FFS) I can to this now.

Cheers, Rodomo. I've added that link to my favourites as Im sure it will come in very handy down the track as well as now. :spoton:

Without this forum and the great people Ive met and dealt with my poor Torana would still be sitting in the yard rusting or I'd be flat broke.... one or the other.

Just thought I'd put this one to bed.

I had to get another long bolt for this starter, no drama there. When I went to bolt the starter up in realised the bloody bolts are about 20mm too long. No worries, I thought, nothing a couple (6 to be exact) of washers cant fix. Then I thought I better check that the gear that engages the flywheel is at the same level (height) as the old starter. Not so. It was about 4-5mm out. So I made up a plate from a bit of aluminium to sit between the engine block and the starter. Bolted it all up (looked dodgy with all the washers) and wired it up. Turned the key and nothing. Not a flippin thing at all.

Swore for 15mins or so and thought f*ck it, I'll get the old starter reco'd after all. So after sourcing a reco unit from this really friendly and knowledgable German bloke near home (Buhtmanns Electriks... see yellow pages) I now have the UC firing up again.

Lessons learned:

1. Stick with plan A where possible.
2. Measure up everything. It takes five minutes and can save heaps of time and a few dollars.
3. Research before modifying.

I'm sure this modification can and will work, its been done before and I will have another go at it. But for a quick fix, the reco was the way to go. On the other hand, if I didnt pick up the VS starter, I wouldnt have picked up an electric dissy at the same time. So it wasnt a waste of time after all :D
