My Lx Hatch has a police appointed chassis number as the previous one could not be read. I want to try and get it changed back to original for values sake. I have the original owners manual with the original chassis number written on there but still i don't think i will have much luck getting ti changed back. Has anyone had this happen to them and did anyone try to get the original back?

I would say that if you can find the original number still stamped you would have a fair chance of getting it changed back. You would need to take the car in person to your local registration authority to have it inspected. They would decide if the changes to the description were justified and allowable. Might come down to the individual inspector on the day applying his/her interpretation of the law. Find the number first would be my advice.

paint strip the area and see if you can find the number, however, once a police number has been issued, I know in NSW it can't be reversed

Agree with everyone above ^
My hatch had it's chassis number ground off - I needed a new one stamped in by the rego office... Didn't cost any extra but a bit of a hassle...

Chassis numbers are accepted on face value, i.e. if they look sus a little further digging will be done. What this means on a Holden is that if the numbers are not neat, aligned and straight, the Police (or RTA) will dig a little deeper to get to the true identity of the vehicle. If you have a Police number issued it means that at some stage the original chassis number was removed or damaged. This is not uncommon if the car has had a decent front end prang and it has gone over the pits/blue slip inspection. If you re-stamp the number and its not factory fresh you risk a lot of hassle trying to verify the number. Its a pain but it may be better to keep the Police number, at least that is legal on the vehicle.

fairly sure its the same in Vic.
police number will always override any number that was there.

I have had a really good look at it and someone has already tried to restamp it which i am assumeing is one of the reasons the police number was issued. Thanks for your help people.
