Hi all,

I'm after some information on Ford 9" rear housings, specifically with regards to the 2.835" single row bearing (narrow) and 2.835" double row bearing (wide).

Are the axle housings different to accomodate the double row bearing or is a spacer plate used to simply extend the single row axle housing to accomodate the wider bearing?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

im 99% sure you use the spacer plate for the single row bearing, but the housings are the same xy-xb falcons i think. ring james @ sydney comp ware house 02 9891 5088. he will know for sure.

Thanks for the reply. I think you're correct in that the spacer plate is used for a single row bearing setup.

Hi Guys.

The wide bearing was only used in XA/XB/XC 9" with rear discs. It was the caliper mount thickness that acted as the spacer to make up the difference. All rear drum 9" Falcons use the narrow bearing. The housing ends are the same regardless of whether disc or drum.

Also the XW/XY housing & axles are shorter than XA/XB/XC. From memory the later one is 1.5" (38 mm) wider.

Thanks for clarifying that Dr Terry.

I've recently purchased a RRS rear brake kit and the above photo is the spacer that is included in the wide bearing variant (the spacer is " in thickness). I've been trying to decide which is the better two of the options, wide or narrow bearing axles.

I'm getting conflicting information. I've been told that wide bearings tend to wear out axles. Apparently it's common on rear disc ends.

Does anyone have any other information on either setup?

Thanks.

Hi antelopeslr5000.

IMHO the weak spot in a Ford 9" rear end is the axle bearings.

The narrow ones are just acceptable, while the wide ones are sh#t.

In Aust Fords, the wide bearings were only fitted to XA, XB & XC rear disc braked cars. All Aust Ford rear drum 9" cars used the narrow bearings.

If you are doing a conversion use the later model (Holden or Ford) tapered rear axle bearings. I know it's more work, but the end result is a bulletproof rear end.

Thanks for the info Dr Terry.

Just another quick question, do Ford and Holden use the same size tapered bearings?
