G'day Guys,

I think my Battery in my Torana has died. As most of you know, i don't drive my torana heaps any more, but whenever i do it always has a flat or almost flat battery. And i am getting sick of having to charge it all the time...

So what i want to know is what do all you guys use? What CCA are your batteries, and what brand are they?

Cheers

If I recall correctly D.A. used a 260cca and had had it in the car for 8yrs.
I would recommend around 450cca. VZ Commodore came standard with about 430cca.

Any battery will need regular charging wether it be driving it or plugging into the wall.

Hi

And when you settle on a new battery, have a think about one of these in the link. Because my car is used infrequently, I have it permanently attached to one. The battery is always fully charged and doesn't die prematurely from lack of use and fast charges.

Grab a trickle charger while you are at it. Has a plug/adapter permanently hooked up to the battery. Park it plug it in and forget it. Normally only expect 4 years from a battery, although I have had seven years from one.

Try disconecting your battery terminal too. If you dont use the car often then just disconect one of the terminals it makes sure there no drain on the battery.

Almost always used Exide with no worries... I get 4 or 5 years out of them usually, enough for me! I used 'masse' once - lasted about 2 weeks!

The charge and maintain battery chargers are the way to go. They start charging when the battery falls below a preset voltage and the stop and monitor the battery until it needs charging again.

I had this one permanently wired on my hatch with the plug in the grill.

Most batterys these days come from the same factory in Korea I'm sure as a lot of distributors have their own company name on them.
I've found super charge batterys absolute crap though.
They may have got better over the years but I'll not try them again.
The reason batterys are charged off the shelf is from the chemical reaction between acid and lead.
They usually only have a surface charge.Enough to start the car but not a lot left.
Any new battery that has just been filled with acid should be put on charge for a short time.
I go on the amount of plates on a cell (11 plate or 15 plate).
The more plates the more cranking power.
The sticker on top of the battery should indicate how many plates per cell there are.

Unhook it when not in use and you should have no worries. I can leave mine 4 - 6 weeks and have no probs when I hook it back up. Exide have been great for me. I also have a trickle charger as a back up for use every now and then if I think we are getting low.

If you want Australian made then go Century/Yuasa.

They are made in Carole Park, Qld.

I use a 550cca for my VK BT1 and its about 6 years old.

I've used a lot of different batteries, but the last one I decided to buy was an Exide X56 (C or D depending on what side you want your terminals on - I think Toranas are "D", but better check).

small package, 550 CCA, 105 minutes reserve capacity, around $140 - K Mart sell them, and sometimes have a 20% off batteries sale.

Exide webpage The website still has the old model list. The E550H is now the X56.

I'd also highly recommend a trickle charger such as the others have recommended, or a 'battery fighter' which is available from Dick Smith Jaycar and Supercrap Auto. Leave the battery connected in the engine bay if you have an alarm or digital car stereo, and wire in one of these with a quick release plug (Battery fighters have them included).

I used to use Odyssey batteries, but they're too damn expensive and their after sales service/warranty is now abysmal. I don't think I'd buy another one. Optimas are also popular, but not really good value when you compare them to 'mormal' wet lead acid batteries. Twice the price and more, but not twice the performance.
