Anyone know roughly what to set the lash on a Solid holden 6 cam at? im unsure of the cam specs and dont have the cam card as i bought the engine off a mate who dosent remember.

i was thinking setting them to about 0.020 cold, which should open out to about 0.022 hot.

this sound about right?

mine was a loose 18 thou cold...

i never has the cam card so i set it to where it went the best.

that cam was an apparent stage 3, if yours is big..or realy small then i would say its diff

apparently big solids have larger gap..like upwards... 22 thou

isnt it when its hots the gap closes up?.. due to expansion.. thats how i've always known it anyway

Is the engine in the car yet?
If not, remove the back welsh plug to see if there is anything printed on the back of the cam.
Too tight, and you will grind the lobes off the cam.

Tip:

Exhaust are usually looser than inlet as the exhaust components (especially the valve) get hotter and expand more decreasing the clearence.

Also gives exhaust valve more time seated to displace heat.

Er, no. Too tight and it won't run very well. Way too tight and it won't run at all (cos you'll have valves being held open).

I wouldn't stress too much over it; if you set it at about 0.020" you'll be safe. There's surprisingly little change in the lash between hot and cold; I always set them cold simply because I don't like to burn my fingers..

my old solid cam in my 202 didnt have the spec on it so i just set it the same as a caterpillar 3516 engine which is 15 inlet and 30 exhaust and it ran fine then when i bought my new solid cam that was what the specs were.

its supposed to be best to set them up hot but i guess you have to be real quick, i cant ever get it rite, I just about burn myself on the first rockers and the engine feels just slightly warm when i am at the last rockers.
last time i did my rockers hot i figured i took too long and ended up e doing them again a week later cold
to make things a bit easier i made a bump switch witch plugs onto the back of the alternator and onto the starter motor, you just tap the button quick to slightly move it or hit it longer for bigger turns

Another way to save burnt fingers is to just set one intake and one exhaust hot. Let the engine cool right down and then remeasure the clearance on those two valves; that's the cold setting that you can use from then on. But don't be surprised if it's within a couple of thou of the hot setting anyway..
Valve clearance is one of those things some people get all anal about but really if it's plus or minus a few thou it'll be fine..

old thread I know, but I just did this. Got the following

In. 12 thou hot = 8 thou cold

Ex. 14 thou hot = 12 thou cold

The exhaust is pretty much what I was expecting, but the intake change of 4 thou is more than I anticipated.  Engine is an alloy headed 202.  Black EVL valves.

Plausible, or remeasure?

I assume the alloy head would expand more than the valve, increasing the clearance. You'd expect the exhaust valve to be a lot hotter than the intake so the difference in lash would be smaller on that side. What you measured sounds reasonable to me.

Trick my mate did for me was to mark the balancer with white marker so I'd just quickly turn engine over by hand untill a mark lined up then do rockers lol.
