hey all

i know ive posted about air compressors before as to what to look for when buying one for the purpose of spraying and general use. i have had a look around at a few tool shops and although its expensive i havent found much better then the McMillan AF-16. It has a Free Air Delivery of 12.3cfm (348L/min), 58L tank, ABAC pump, TECO motor. These are built in Australia. Cheapest ive seen it for is $930 or there abouts...

Have also considered a Renegade, but i cant seem to find any information on them being sold in Victoria (just googled for it). Does anyone know of anywhere that sells them?

Renegade Link

Have thought about a Peerless too, but they seem to be even more expensive then the McMillan. I wasnt anticipating spending so much (always the case...).

Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated! :spoton:

Yes mate.
One of the most reliable companies is Ingersol Rand, you will find that quite a few other branded compressors are actually Ingersol Rand units renamed. i think the mcmillan might be one of them.

I bought an ingersol rand one a few years ago, think it cost about $1200. also get a multi staged one with coolers between stages and cast iron not aluminium.

And just to let you know I am actually a mechanical supervisor on a mine so have had quite a lot to do with various compressors

My two bits worth I researched compressors quite extensively when I bought mine about 14yrs ago. I was doing a lot of panelbeating and spraypainting at home. I ended up by a Macmillan gunrunner and no regrets. It hasn't missed a beat in all that time and boy has it been used. It has even been borowed out to a paint shop at one stage when there compressor blew up. Ingersol and rand are also excellent but I was able to get a better deal on the Mac. Most of the reputable companies use the same suppliers for the parts eg betts electic motors etc. Basically you really pay for what you get when it comes to compressors.

Although the benefits of a multi stage compressor (i dont believe the AF-16 McMillan is a multi-stage?) would be good, but im just not interested in stepping up to that level (budget limits...). your advice is certainly appreciated :spoton:

cheers

I bought a higher end no name years ago and i think their flow rates are inflated a lil but it has done the job, i think the capacity of the compressor to suite your needs and spare parts back up etc is more important than brand.

I have a $99 GMC disposable from Bunnings. I have that hooked up to a bigger reservoir. I just listen for it to cycle and turn off and keep spraying. :spoton:

your right name brands dont mean much however they are the ones that make quality. I have 3 different makes of compressors here all mega huge, atlas copco, compair and some weird sweedish thing for a big oxygen plant.
It obviously depends on what you want too, if you want one to last many years for a bit of hard work spend the extra coin.
if its only for 1 job buy a cheapie.

the aluminium ones wear out quicker so you will find that you will get oil in your lines earlier as it wears out.
