I was talking to Rocket today and thought I might just point out some useless info I had stored at the back of my brain on slicks.

When we did the GP bikes..all slicks were arrowed directional assuming they were on the rear driving the car/bike. It maybe common knowledge...it may not...but if you run slicks on the front the directional arrow needs to be pointing the wrong way..i.e...towards the back of the car/bike. This is because all forces on the front tyre are in braking..so are opposite to the driving wheels...therefore you run them backwards so as to not put pressure/open up the tread join in the mould..know as the splice.

Might be useful to someone...you might say..we knew that..

My useless rabbling for the day is done.

but what if their directional tyres then in the wet wouldn't they would pull water into the centre of the tyre not forcing it out the sides?

WOW!

From the PMs...did this open up a can of worms?....So it appears when people buy slicks...no one tells them this info...they assume you guys already know. Lots of fronts running the wrong way out there...check that your splice isnt opening up on the fronts.

So is the arrow at the top or bottom of the tyre ?

Hey Rory, if this is the case.... And I don't doubt your knowledge on tyres for a minute.
Then what about "R" specs.... if the arrow should point backwards on the front and forwards on the rear and they don't make specific FRONT and REAR labelled tyres. Does this mean that we are at risk of case seperation?
Or does it only apply to slicks/rag tyres and not radials?

Cheers Greg..

Good question Greg...When I was talking to Stuckeys I should have asked...the answer was the same for rag and radial slicks, fronts backwards.....I will fire off a email to Alan Bradshaw at Yokohama about A032/48s and find out..Will report back. I know on some of the new tyres they roll a 25mm wide strip of rubber onto the case around and around until the buildup is the correct size......thereby eliminating to problem of the older style construction of putting the tread on in one go and fusing it at the splice in the tread.

OK..Bradshaw says the Yokohama process is as above therefore the arrow goes the way it is supposed to...He also conceres on the reverse front slicks practice due to the amount of heat and shit loads of grip they generate. Final point...he says you can run the fronts R Specs in reverse to get some more mileage out of them if you have chopped out the insides due to camber angle no worries...but added...for christ sakes dont run them that way in the wet.....the end result would be obvious.

So it appears its a no for R spec treaded tyres and a yes for full on slicks .
