Yeah recently after fitting a new vaccuum advance to my electronic ignition dizzy. it has been running on after turning it off.
i have backed the timing off to 0 degrees and it still seems to do it.
it does not idle fast either.
Any help appreciated. it has a standard varajet 2 on it with that fuel cut off solenoid.

What fuel are you using?

I bought a torry today and it run on like a bitch...10 bucks of premium into it and it hasn't done it since.

Is the cutoff soleniod working..easy to test..put power to it and listen.

Float maybe too high

or the vac advance mechanism needs some lube...when you take the cap off and suck on the tube does it move freely? does it return all the way?

The advance of the dizzy shouldnt make any difference when you have turned the motor to off, although if you have been running too little or too much advance there is a chance that you plugs have got too hot and they are causing pre ignition.
Does it run on in all conditions, hot cold etc?

Running on is caused by detonation or hot spots in the combustion chamber. Retarding the timing will make it run hotter. I would look at the carby settings, mainly the base idle. That is with the big idle by pass screw turned all the way in you should be idling at around 450 - 500rpm. If it is any higher you have to adjust your base idle at the butterfly. After you have 450 - 500 at the butterfly, readjust the idle bypass screw out to obtain your idle speed. The idle solenoid shuts off the air passage to the idle bypass screw.

yeah it only did it when it was hot, i went and saw our local mechanic this arvo and we checked the solenoid it was ok. then we backed the idle down to 500 rpm.
she turns off fine now.! thanks anyway

well this motor runs on straight unleaded with no pinging at all
But i have fitted a Pro zone fuel conditioner. which puts the lead back in the fuel. cost me $150 thru repco.

i have ran on premium with it and dont notice much difference

They dodn't add lead. Most of them use tin, which does a similar job to lead in the way it increases octane and lubricates the valves. I have used similar items for years. They seem to work well. Change them every million KM, which is about 11 years for me in the work van.

As far as the 1 tonner goes, I'd get the dissy rebuilt and regraphed. That would be the best bet if he intends to keep it for a few more years. Plus hardened inserts or one of those fuel thingos. Cost would be similar for both options, provided you or your dad provides the labour.
