Hi there,

Just wanted to get a few opinions on relocating the battery in my LX Sedan to the Boot,

How have others done it?

Do you run the cables along the underside of the car and then come up through the boot floor, do you run them in some sort of protection (eg. flexible tubing/conduit) ?

I have heard of people running the cables through the cabin of car, along the floor, then through to the boot.

Does this sort of mod need to be engineered?

Have others found this as a good mod to do or just a pain in the backside?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hi Heppy

I cant give you much information on this mod as yet but Jeremy and I are also planning to move my battery to the boot. Jeremy has done this before.

I have heard others here state that it's a sure way to assist corrosion and rusting of your Torana boot.

If using a conventional battery then it has to pass rego inspection (over the pits?) to ensure the battery box is vented to the atmosphere outside the boot. I am unsure if this requires engineering or not but the way things are heading here I suspect it might.

For what its worth when we move mine I will make a sticky on it for the mods approval and one thing for certain is we will be using one of the fully sealed batteries, not sure what brand or model yet.

Cheers
Herne

Some batteries are vented in that they are sealed but have a tube running into the top of the battery. The other end of the tube exits the boot. The tube is about 5/16". VE Commodore have a boot mounted battery (a first for Holden). Also BMW, Merc. and Mazda MX5 to name a few.

I use welding wire for mine and they go through the inside of the car then i use the proper plastic electrical glands to go through the firewall. just have to be careful running it under the back seat to make sure it does not rub anywhere.

from the boot it comes under the back seat along the sill panel until the front of the drivers seat. at the front of the drivers seat it goes across to the tunnel then along the tunnel until it goes through the firewall.

just remember to run a fat cable otherwise you will get volt drop and have problems starting your car.
also make sure you run a decent earth from the engine back to the boot.
My old man is a sparky and made me run the same size welding wire.

I think in NSW the battery cable has to run outside the car for rego. Check with the RTA in your state.

Make sure your voltage regulator is in good condition as well. I heard a story once(which may or may not be true), about a bloke who had a HQ Monaro with the battery in the boot. The regulator threw a leg out of bed and over-charged the battery. Battery supposedly exploded, blew acid all through the boot and blew the cones out of his parcel shelf mounted speakers!

It was a second hand story, admittedly sounds far fetched, but still plausible...

Hi mate as herne said I have done this alot cable size is not a big problem but yes higher amp wire is what I use

From your boot run the + lead along the pasanger side dont go under the seat!!!!
will sort out over time

run the + wire throw the fire wall and get a good rubber gromet and hook to the starter motor

- I hook to the bumper bar bolts make sure you use the same size wire then a neat trick is to hook your gearbox to the car keeps wires out of the engine bay good luck

If you want or need anymore info pm me happy to help :D

Ive done the battery in the boot, In my hatch and have had all the problems and threfore worked it out

What i done was run Heavy duty wire Under the car, then grommet into the boot area,
Earthed battery to the boot and earthed the starter motor to the chassis, We found that with no earth up front the engine barely cranked,
once that was sorted it cranked very well

Also get your altenator done up, I found that a 75amp Just done the job. Then stepped up to VN Altenator internals which from memory are around the 95amp

I was running a 16" thermo fan and Carter electric fuel pumps

Hope this helps you out
