g'day can someone help me with my engine i have just fitted a set of brock heads and new crane cam to the 308 the engine allready had a set of rolla rockers with guide plates 7/16" dont know what brand i am trying to reassemble and am not happy with rocker mount studs and guide plates the thread on the studs going into the heads 7/16"UNC finishes a good 1/8" to 3/16" before the "head" of the stud and the guide plate is not being actually secured and stud is tightening to the end of thread it does not seem correct ?
the heads that i removed off engine had several valves tops mushroomed i dont know what caused it but i have spent too much money on top end now to risk failure .

I only use ARP studs with comp cams locs.
Mushroomed valve stems could be from incorrect push rod length causing excessive valve side load.
Your thread is a little hard to read, there being no fullstops and commas ect :tease:

^^ What he said..get an expert to set it up...otherwise it will be coming off again.

Should there be a flat washer under the stud ?

Either that or remove the first couple of threads in the head.
That's why the machinst will ask you to bring your studs in when he/she does the job.

Have had an even better look at existing setup and definately believe that these rocker studs are going in the bin i will get a set of crane studs from Chris Mills hopefully by Saturday ,
I appreciate the advice to get an expert but believe me there are no gurus here in Dusborough W.A. I am running with my experience of 15 years as a heavy duty fitter predominately in the mines to get me through what started out as a simple cam change in the car that i have owned for 8 months and quickly finding out what has done been properly and what hasn't .
It's all part of the learning curve. There is another question i have but the slots in the guide plates for the "rollers or guides" are a little bit oblong looks like its meant to be that way to allow for slight side movement .the rollers have a deep recess where they slide into guide plates to allow for movement?
Are these guideplates right? or does the cash register go caching again?
All i want to do is get to Motorvation next weekend.
hope to see a few crew from here at the show if you see FAT SLR there you"ll know i have worked my way through it any words of wisdom welcome

Ive brought two different brands of guides before, and have found sidewaz movement to be normal.
Good idea to Read this on rocker geometry

i dunno if this helps at all ... its a holden 6 but the principle is the same ...

these guide plates have brass bushes in them that stop the pushrod from moving left and right (in the pic) but they can still move forward and backwards as needed.

some more angles but definately they should be secured to the head tightly .... i don't believe the studs are supposed to secure by bottoming out .... i'd either shim them with washers or maybe lop some off the bottom of them ....

Are the joys of owning a muscle car, get the correct screw in studs or have current units cut down to suit, Guide plate without brass bush will have some side movement, guide plate with brass bush as in Sammy's photo's (look like YT units) will have nil side movement and you will need to adjust the plate to ensure pushrod travels freely. YT recommend a small shifter and manually adjust the plate up or down (via bending it) to ensure the pushrod dosen't grab. Sunburst

If the stud is bottoming out maybe the hole needs to be deepened & more thread added.

WarrenM is spoton i got my brand new ARP screw in stud kit this morning and as per instructions checked studs in mount post threads and found that i needed another 1/4'' of thread in heads .
With heads allready bolted down i decided to cut 1/4" off studs as they definately have enough thread to not be affected by it .
Got drivers side all done torqued to spec looking good then the first thread on passenger side as i torqued stud the mount"post" cracked hairline like F@$#ing good fun today i thought to myself.
I continued with the rest of the head and got the rest done only loseing minimal skin to the vice on breakthrough while hacksawing studs .
On inspection of post the wall of post is quite thin where it is cracked it is way off centre of the "casting" and with original size mount thread was ok but after being machined out to 7/16" it has obviously failed.
So now i will wait and see if i can get the local mobile welder to vee out crack and weld in situ or i will be pulling head off to get repaired.
I think i am not meant to be going to Motorvation in the Torrie neaxt weekend i
the Monaro might get a run {dead stock 308 trimatic } beautiful to drive but cant compare to Torrie .Fingers crossed post can be welded in place .

Garth

Righto pulled head off last night and took it into Phil at south western machining this morning [Phil owns a very tidy LH SLR5000 himself] and got him to weld up crack in rocker post for me. Cost was a promised ride around in supercruise at Motorvation this weekend he is a legend.
Bolted head back down this arvo and fitted rocker studs and rockers all good then the next hurdle has arisen i have gone to bolt down my brand new Edelbrock Torker and it doesn't fit ,You learn something everyday my Brock B cast heads are not compatable to early style Torker [F#*$king good fun today]
So 1 anyone chaseing a brand new Torker send me a PM
2 Torker manifolds are not available to suit these heads as far as i can find out so what is the best manifold for me to buy need to buy today .
The clock is ticking and i need to get her back together.
