just wondering what order you paint a car?do you start at the roof? then go where?
do you paint the sides a panel at a time or do you do long strokes from the front to the back of the car?

Cheers.

I start at the top and work my way down. Generally a panel at a time corner to corner, but having said that, doors, front guards, boot and bonnet are normally removed and painted on their own, so that doesn't really leave any large surfaces left.

Hi Makka, sorry to mix things up a bit but I start at the bottom and work my way up.

I start at the bottom side panels underneath the doors, then inside the door area (provided you have all the panels off like my car there <----), then to the rear quarter panel, then to the rear and boot. After that I go to the other side and repeat, and finish at the rear quarter panel. Then all thats left is the front pillars and roof. Engine bay and front end can be done seperately or you can do it now.

Also, must mention I am not a professional so I can't guarantee this is the best advice but it has worked best for me.

Looks like there is no one way of doing it. I paint the insides of the doors first before anything else, and finish that bit off, as it doesn't get rubbed back, just off the gun finish.

Whatever works for you I suppose? Might give some of these other methods a go though and see what works for me.

Actually, I lie. It varies with the car. If the interior is totally removed then above, otherwise I just mask up the door opening, do the roof first, then door openings/reveals, then sill, then rear quarters, boot opening, then the rear. All depends how stripped back the car is.

Apologies, bit tired, too many forumers kept me up IRCing last night.

Do it all at once, spray your door insides under boot bonnet etc, put the whole car back together and start at the top, and work your way down. after hours of prep work it is not worth the risk of draging hoses through soft / wet paint on the doors, and your sure to have matching pannels.

Makka, i'd recommend standing back and having a good look at the car and work out a plan of attack in your head that allows you to paint what you need without any stopping and starting. This will get you the finish you want.

Every car is different so there isnt any one way to go about it, i sometimes prefer to start painting at the bottom of the panel and work up, then again sometimes top down is the way to go.

Walk around the car with a pretend gun in your hand and act out how'd you'd like to do it, whichever way is most comfortable and gets you the consistent finish and result.

Well i painted my HQ on the weekend and did it something like this, Roof, Bonnet, then front gaurds, doors, bootlid, rear qtr... I would just agree with wat everyone else has said, try and start at the top and go to bottom, but as long as u get a nice even coating and no marks in the paint there is no correct way!

Best of Luck!

Great makka. For those of us who've never done it (or seen it done like me) could you post plenty of pix?
Hope all goes well.

if your spraying 2k t hen give it a light coat first, so you can just see it, then give it two more slightly heavyer coats. still not ver heavy though. 2k is a bitch for runs. at work i use a star gun to spray 609 2k, which is industrial stuff but still similar, i only ever have it out about 3 turns on the mixture, when doing something i don't want runs i have it at 2.5 turns. for first coat have it at about 2 turns. that should be a good guildeline....fiddle with it from there, just remember, if you put it on to heavy it looks great when it comes from the gun, great 2 minutes later, but stroll away for 5 minutes and come back and all you have is a pile of runs!!! the only way to fix this is thinners my friend, take it off and start again.
