my dad (3point3), dave bought this car couple of years back in running condition. At the time the torana was 1st priority but now its all done the Jag is getting a bit of attention.

We are just taking it apart, finding rust and trying to work out all the crazy wiring thats been installed (gas system), with injectors...

this is going to be a full rebuild and we are just working out how to get the motor out because its so HUGE, and having a tiny garage doesnt help!!!

anyway here a some recent and old pics, but while i dont have skool, i will b doin quite a bit of work on it to get the ball rolling!

Beautiful car mate.

Biggest problem is the wiring in those things, completely useless. Honestly you would be better off ripping the whole harness out and starting again.

Cheers.

Yeah I have a friend who has a Jag of that era and 80% of the work he does on it is wiring. Don't know whether the looms are a bad design or just age poorly or what, but they seem to be a big problem :P

Will be a nice car when finished. Ride quality is just amazing.

The Dad here, (thanks son),
Love & Loath, wiring is crap, heat cracks all over the engine loom! Mid life crisis still kicks in thou. Compared to today it's pretty basic, injection only takes info from a few things, the "EMS" is all resistors, diodes and capacitors, no chips here. Alloy V12 @ about 500kg, 5.3 ltr OHC (1 per side), no rockers, direct over valves, bucket shim adjustment! Output ??? not as much as you would expect, but from factory redlines @ 6500 (200 ++ kph) and idles at 750 in neutral! Can't see the ground looking in the engine bay, only found the oil filter today (2 years on). These things are cheap to buy as it still costs a lot to get them back to great. Must use Davis Craig water pumps/fans etc to combat latent heat problems. Some great stats, oil 12 ltrs, economy 18ltrs'100k (flat out) petrol in/petrol out heaps, (needs a bucket at the exhaust). Even the over pressure fuel back to the tank goes through the A/C! :fool:

Don't know where you are located, but there is a fellow over here into those things if you ever have to compare notes.

Wow, that's a mess_terpiece.
Just the engine bay should keep you busy for a while.

The Jag-lovers site has heaps of info on these XJSs or is that XJ-Ss, anyway, Top Gear did a story on a company in the North of England that does new looms and suspension parts for around 35,000 pounds drive in, drive out that gets rid of some of the nastiness. They don't call Lucas the prince of darkness for nothing.

To take on one these you must have some time and money on your hands considering what running cars in good condition are selling for now.

James

ps A Jag with a Chev in it is called a Lump.

Theres one of these thats been getting around my area for about 10 years now, its white and running a 350 chev. I've always liked the idea of a nicely restored luxury car with a angry ass SBC in it. But you'd think there'd be some potential in the factory V12. It's obviously a tiny stroke and being OHC you'd probably be able to get it to rev off his tits (9 grand) etc. What do the 5L V12 ferraris redline @?

Good luck with the project, I look forward to seeing your progress.

Cheers
Marty

I specialised in Jags once upon a time and they were fairly advanced stuff in their day.

Drop the crossmember to get donk out in 1 piece, first car designed with CAD to fit everything under bonnet in a compact way.Assemble everything before refitting.

A simple job like fitting starter motor takes about 6hrs because you have to remove heaps of things to get to it..lol

The V12 is a very smooth motor yet a bit breathless up top because of restrictive manifold, nothing 6 webers couldnt fix or weber style injection.
Chev motors are harsh compared to the Jag donk.

They have a turbo 400 box with a independant salisbury diff.

Try Cathouse spares at enfield for a catalog for parts (sydney)

Does that mean a Chev will bolt straight up?

One of my brothers has an 1985 V12 HE Jag. He is ( or was ) in the process of selling the engine and rolling body seperately. He's also not too far from Warranwood. Let me know if you want me to chase him up for something.

And LX2DR, yes a SBC will bolt straight up. Just need an interesting sump.

I have seen an E Type Jag with 6 down draught webers on it,
it went like a bullet!!

And yes, Bob from Cat House Spares is the bloke to speak to
about these beasties, his shop is only up the road from where I live.
