Hey I know it sounds like a ridiculous problem, but I cannot get the glovebox of the Sunbird I'm stripping open.

I took the crash pad off so that I could investigate the problem a bit more closely, but it didn't tell me much. The locking mechanism is pretty loose in there, but it just won't let me open it. I've tried different Torana keys and assorted tools :P

Obviously as a last resort i'll get the pinch bar out and Bob's your uncle, but woodgrain dashes are going up in value so it isn't what I would like to do.

The reason I am asking here, is because as you all know, I haven't had a Torana as a daily driver so I've never experienced little problems that need a "Torana owner's-touch" and considering most of you have, I thought that you may have ways of overcoming this stuff.

- I thought it would be easy to deal with with a bit of rattling around, I've taken out dashes before but there may be some tricks I don't know of. One thing i don't want to damage is the lining of the glovebox, it is in good condition and the Green Machine's one sucks balls.

Thanks in advance.

How loose is the locking mechanism? The lock unscrews to separate the inner and outer part of the lock.

from memory it isn't locked heath but it is a bugger to open, lots of giggling from memory, try holding slight pressure on the glove box lid by pulling it foward before/and as your turning the latch. If that wont work you can tear through the bottom of the cardboard lining of the bottom of the glove box and reach up to the latch from the back and open it that way, it would be better to sacrifice the glovebox lining than the facia

but I'm sure if you persist with the latch it will open . I had it open (hope I didn't leave too many valuables in there :D :D :D )

The thing is, I'd prefer to damage the fascia than the lining, because the lining on the Green Machine is buggered and I've got spare fascias at home anyway. If I find anything in there I'll tell you Steve.

When I get home from school I'll have anotehr crack at it and post what I've come up with.

As I've already told Heath the glovebox is NOT locked (I should know I sold him the car :D ), the problem is that the lock mechanism is loose and when you are turning the latch the whole mechanism is turning (not just the centre section which unlatches the glovebox lid) as the whole mech turns it is not releasing the catch, you need to stop the mech from turning to get the catch to operate. Whatever you do Heath , don't brake anything, if you can't get it open I'll be in Melbourne this weekend and I'll drop around and get it open for you :spoton: :spoton:

Sounds like a typical old car problem :P I'll have a go at it in a few hours. I'll give you a ring if I still have no luck with it, Steve. Thanks for the offer!

ROFLMAO that woulda been lots of fun. Regardless, the dash is coming out completely anyway so that won't be a problem for me.

w00t. I got the son-of-a-bitch at last. I don't even know what I did lol but it worked.

The moral of this story: If a screwed up locking mechanism won't open, rattle it around furiously until you get somewhere.
