My ID tags - off the car - are tarnished. Obviously, I am nervous about using any cleaners on it without first knowing if there will be any harm come to them. So, can anyone advise on how to clean my tags and return them to a nice shiny condition. Thanks Ron

Hi ron my bro in law uses very fine steel wool seems to do the trick without scratches

Might have answered my own question. Just had a go with some paint stripper and they came up very clean. The paint stripper seemed to remove all the dirt and stains. I used a tooth brush to scrub. Not bad. R

Steel wool will work but a less abrasive way would be to soak them in coke for a couple of days (the sugary liquid type) to clean them up, then give them a final clean off with some quality alloy polish. This should also stop them from oxidising again.

Love your Indy Orange GTR - NICE car.

EDIT: woops, posted at the same time!!!

I love that the tags on mine are old and tarnished, I cleaned them up somewhat so you can read the numbers, but made sure i left some overall scum. goes well with the whole clean unrestored looking engine bay

If they are not painted just give em a rub with autosol polish. Elbow grease and polish works wonders.

If they are painted remove the paint first lol

I use the cheap 'rustex'? stuff from stupid cheap.

Use a weak mix of rustex & water, & scrub with a brass toothbrush.
They come up fantastic.

Thats what I was goign to suggest having done the old grimy coin in a cup of coke experiment. Brings them up like new from memory.
Anyone who has ever done that experiment would have to be left wondering what it does to your guts.

lol Be carefull Ron you dont want them to clean, some forum member might think they look " a little too new " if ya know what I mean :tease: apparently these days if you clean your tags it means you've had repro's made.

^^ HAHA, Thats So true Hatcheddan! ^^

Actually if the plates have been off the car, the car is no longer what the tags say! Be careful Ron! People might get you if you ever go to sell the car!
