By the time the cars arrived in Sydney, the most arduous part of the event was over. Overall, I'd say all cars looked in pretty good condition, including panels.
The same couldn't be said of the Cortinas, which were showing fatigue cracks in the bodywork.

I am sure they looked good Monza 1 because they had all their panels and at least one had to have had a rebody some time in the race as i saw them from the QLD border and there is no way that they were the cars that i saw ,as i said one had been rolled and severely damaged and wired together , a friend of mine that worked for holden where they were seviced said that they were totaly rebuild at certain stops and that included panels anyway you can chose to beleive that they got there unmarked but if you hit a roo with the rabbit bars that they had on their cars i know what happens , Maybe my memory of what they looked like is distorted a bit but they seemed to be pretty damaged to me, TREX

Hi
Any ideas on the spare silver car that went with them or the HDT vans. Was there any more VBs built for the event that were no for HDT use.

I met Barry Cooke in Hervey Bay today...He has one of the 'spare' HDT cars from this rally...it appears that extras were made with engine and all in situ..painted in HDT colours and placed along the route..Dont know how many ...He owns one...now painted orange but mechanically identical to the winning car with tripples etc....and ..YES..he is considering selling it soon...I have first bite...I will try to get pics...All it needs is to replace back to HDT colours...it has HDT interior and door trims in it he tells me....and I REALLY want to see the build plate!

Here's a photo of 1 of the HDT Commodores I took at the National Motor Museum near Adelaide about 1994.

hi all, have been a little busy with daz's estate of late to catch up with much on the forum but it seems there is some interest on the old VB rally cars.
barry ferguson tells me that ch. 10's RPM have done an segment on the car and it will be on during august so check the proramme details or ring ch 10.
the camshaft in those engines was an "XJ'..... the silver car was the test or prototype car that was used quite extensively, broken, fixed and strengthened in all weak areas until it was bulletproof and that is what the 3 only HDT cars were built to.
yes there were a number of other cars built for promotional use and customer cars, about 15 i think from what barry remembers.. all the cars were built at george shepheards workshop.
if i can get an exact date for the programme i will let you guys know....................cheers laz
