Hi,

I'm a new member based in northern Tassie. Great site fellas.

I have a Glacier White '72 LJ 4dr S. I'm trying to ID the engine that has been fitted to it - it's a 202 and has apparently been built to "GTR specs". I realise the LJ had a standard 202, but this obviously has a lumpy cam and head work.

The engine number can't be read on the block, but per the rego papers it's QL888986. The head is 2811929. Do these numbers tell you anything?

Thanks

Kurt

Hey thanks Milco.

Just been doing some trawling at old holdens.com and came up with QL as a prefix for the high compression 202 (9.4 comp) in HQ and HJ.

Can anyone help on the head number?

Hi Kurt.

Yes,you are correct. The QL prefix if for HQ to HZ 202 hi-comp motors. The 888986 places it somewhere in the last few months of HX production. Check the casting date code near the oil filter.

Fast EH is correct the head is a pre-pollution 173.

Thanks Dr Terry.

Weird though - the number on the block near the filter looks like 8L2 (8 Dec 72???) and the head is 21G3 (21 July 73???). You can't read the serial number, so may not be correct I guess.

Cheers Kurt

Hi Kurt, LJ GTR 202 is Standard Spec, No dual cast exhaust manifold, No Lumpy cam, No 2 Barrel or tripple carb. An every day run of the mill standard 202 with a single down draft Strommie and a standard Holden cast iron exhaust manifold. Your motor sound like someone has done the budget rebuild and put some life into her just enough to free her up a bit a few extra revs when needed. Sunburst

Hey thanks Sunburst. I suspect the old girl has an XU1 cam in her - she's pretty lumpy - haven't pulled the manifold yet to see if the heads have been cleaned up.

My last LJ Torana was in 86/87 - and was a '73 two door S in Sunburst Metallic - love that colour!

This one is a '72 4 dr S in Glacier White. Aussie 4 spd, LSD, 202 with cam, 350 Holley, Lukey extractors, & 2 1/2" exhaust. A lot of fun so far.

Cheers Kurt
