Hey all, just wondering would it be better to have low pressure in your tyres or high pressure? for more smoke and make it easier to spin??? what would be the best pressure to set the tyres at for some action?

cheers

I would probably listen to MYLJ, he seems to know judging by his pic!!! But yeah, I was gonna say higher pressure than normal, and 40 sounds about right. I've only ever been in one burnout comp before and I ran somewhere around the 40psi mark too. The higher the pressure you run, the easier the wheels will spin, but it'll probably wear out the centre of the tyres quicker too. Not sure if tyre pressure would have much effect on smoke produced???

i always let them down a bit from normal so the it burns more than just the centre of the tyre

At lower tyre pressure the tyres tend to balloon up like a drag slick (wears out the centre first) It also tend to make the car spongie and body roll more which in my case is not good for when doing dounuts

excesive pressure (45psi plus) starts the tyre ballooned up, and also wears out the centre of the tyre first ,but you tend to get less flex in the sidewalls ,making circle work easier on the car :D you get less smoke though.

The width of the tyre and the sidewall hieght also effect the amount of "ballooning" that you get

The more important thing than tyre pressure is tyre speed, have a guess at the tyre speed (in the avater pic) its around 120 to 140 miles per hour !

It doesnt matter how much air is in them, at that speed anything will smoke up :D

Since your going for lack of traction, I'd go high pressure. Low pressure will just give you more traction and be harder on the drivetrain. Low pressure would also tend to wear on the edges, not the centre, high pressure will balloon out the centre, wear the centre, and give you a smaller contact area on the road.

What am I doing advising on burnouts?

120-140MPH, HOLY $#!+

I'll definately use higher pressure in the Green Machine coz of the damn banjo, but I won't be going in any comps. :P

I was also going to say around 40 PSI, but everybody else has beaten me to it. So I won't say anything.

but you just did?

If you have the power then lowering the pressure will burn more rubber as the contact patch is longer...if you are underpowered it will just hook up and speer you off the pad or break something.

you will find due to tyre construction you don't get the centre raising up much when you give a tyre lots of pressure...at least nowhere near as much as old cross ply tyres did.

I aggree, making smoke is about resistance. If it spins too easily it wont smoke. And put it in the highest gear you can go before it bogs down. Quality of tyre really matters too. 25 year old wreckers shit smokes poorly.

Dont forget that the higher tyre pressures give a bigger bang when the tyre explodes.I blew apart a tyre & damaged the 1/4 panel after the tyre blew. Its a lot of fun & looks good if it is a car your not worried about damaging.Have fun, dont forget to take pictures.

The diesel will just make the tyres spin, not smoke up. Goodyears don't grip, so they should make the best burnout tyres.
