Hi All

Which is the best & easiest transmission to put behind a chev with approx 400-450hp. Doesnt the tunnel have to be modified to fit powerglide or a 400?.

I believe, dont know though, that you lose less power with the Turbo 350. Any advice? What kind of price am I looking at for a decent transmission with 3500 stall to take the Chev. Rebuild price obviously I wouldnt buy one on words that its had this and this done to it. I notice a second hand suit rebuild is worth $400-$500 alone.

Just budgeting away for the addition of the 350 chev to my LH

TH700 are big bucks to rebuild(so i have been told) but then you do have 4 speeds, probably not much difference in price on rebuilding 350/400 but from what i have been told 400 is heavier and robs more hp. i paid 1600 for my TH350 to be rebuilt with reverse pattern shift and "all the hollywood gear" in its guts and 600 for a 3500 stall dominator. my sbc is supposedly in the 4-450hp range as well, but as i have never started it i cant tell for sure. 2.5 years at the paint shop, it has to come back one day.

I believe the Th350 is as strong as any and a bit lighter.

Go the T350 unless you want highway cruising and running 3.7 or lower gears

T400 robs more power

No tunnel mods required for any of them usually

Some people say the T400 and T700 clear everything, some say they don't. Could be just different x-members, though. Personally, I would either use a Powerglide or T700 behind a SBC.

Go the turbo 350. Nice box bit smaller than a 400 and your not making 800 horsepower so you dont need a glide or a 400. dont really rate the 700 bit i have heard with a bit work they can be good boxes.

But when i worked in the trans shop majority of the street cars ran turbo 350.

The TH700R4 give you the option to setup the car with a 3.55 - 4.11 diff for the 1/4 mile and still be able to cruise at highway speed.

TH700R4
1st - 3.06
2nd - 1.63
3rd - 1.0
4th - 0.7

TH350
1st - 2.52
2nd - 1.52
3rd - 1.0

The GearCalc program will help to to work out what rpm/speed you will be doing for a given tyre, diff and gearbox. Download the GearCalc program, plug in the tyre, gearbox and diff ratios and have a play. There appears to be a problem with the tyre calc in the program so enter the diameter from the Toyo Proxes
chart.

You can buy a TH700 4L65e brand new for under $2000. This is the current GM auto, it will require significant transmission tunnel mods and a computer but will handle the power out of the box.

The early cable kickdown TH700R4 4L60 and the electronic TH700R4 4L60e are the easiest to fit.

if ur considering a turbo 700 or a 4l60e go for a 4l80e much much stronger, can be rated upto 1200hp.

but the current auto is a 6l80e 6 speed with issues.

In an LH-UC use the TH350. You'll have to beef it up for that sort of hp though, as standard a TH350 isn't much different in strength to a late model trimatic. A TH400 is a much better gearbox, but I seriously doubt one would fit in an LH-UC tunnel properly without tunnel mods (but will stand corrected if someone has done it!). Forget the TH700R4 unless you really want overdrive as they are not real strong (unless beefed up heaps) and cost a lot more to build. The TH350 should bolt straight in, use a 4spd or trimatic tailshaft and a UC shifter. But you'll have to get a crossmember made and buy a speedo cable to suit a Saginaw or TH350 into Torana.

You will get bored of the powerglide after 10 minutes on the street, unless you have 4.56's and 500HP. There a boring gearbox on the street.

The Turbo 700 is a waste of time, you can spend $5k on it and it still won't be as strong as a standard 30 year old TH400. Who really takes a torana with flash paintwork on the highway to cop stone chips? Besides the Pacific hwy on the way to Toranafest I don't think you'd see too many Torana's cruising the highway any time soon.

TH350 is what I run, I like them, it will fit and handle the power after a good build up, wont rob as much HP as a TH400 but its no where near as strong as a TH400.

If you want to "set n forget", get yourself a TH400 put a $100 kit thru it and it will handle 500HP in stock form and you will never have a problem. It will suck another 10hp over the TH350 but you dont need to spend any money to strengthen it, its got the shear size, larger input/output shafts etc.

You will need to mod the floor a little bit for the TH400, I have yet to see a TH400 in an LH/X without having at least 1 little love tap.

I would be choosing between a TH350 or 400, wouldnt look twice at the other 2 options for a tough streeter.

forget any electronic 4 speed auto. it would be to much of a headache with a carby engine. i'd suggest a turbo 350. you dont need/jusify a th400.(unless you planning on 1000hp)

and yeah, you need to mod the floor to fit a glide in.

none of the gearboxes require tunnel mods, im defiantly sure about the th350 and th400 and have heard the th700 fit in too.

Go the th350 an get it built to handle the motor. 3.55's in the diff is just bearable on the highway, can still hit decent speeds like 200k/hr. from 150to 200 in my uc pushes you back into your seat. i run a tricked th350 3.55 diff and warm 383

Thanks everyone

TH350 it is, it also seems the most popular. Ill let you all know how it goes. I drive the car approx 2000klm a year so it should last a while... if I be a good lad ofcoarse!!!

All the quotes came around $1800 - $2200 including a 3500 stall which is quite reasonable. Built to handle 450 - 500hp approx and yes, I will check the rep of the shop as much as possible first, have a few mates in the car scene. I want to do it right!!!

UCV80 thats 150 - 200 on the dragstrip isnt it :spoton: Seems we will be running a very similar setup

For your info Im running a 9" with 3.25centre, took the 3.9 out as it was annoying on the highway, but its always there to put back in if need be.

lol never been on the strip :)

3.25 would be the perfect ratio, plenty of muscle in a 383 to haul anything.
