Hey all was thinking of running a bug catcher or hilborn style setup on my GRA carbs and was wondering if its legal or not??

Should be ok if i can get it under my hornet scoop (upper section only so legal coz it passes the 165mm ball test?)

But i would prefer to have no scoop over the bug catcher. Have read that anything protruding though bonnet must be covered with an scoop, but read somewhere else that if it is sealed to bonnet to stop oil etc squirting out/fire its ok...... kinda like a xy gt shaker.
Also read that it can only sick out so far 150mm?? But i will try to keep only half or so sticking out anyway so that shouldn't be a prob.

One other wacked idea was to run slr/a9x style bonnet scoop to cover most of it up but cut out front to look like mach 1/ '69 429 Mustang scoop, better idea or stick with hornet....

Any help or ideas?? :fool:

In most states its illegal as road rubbush can get stuck in the butterflies and jam the throttle open. In WA you can have them but the butterflies can't be connected to the carb linkage (usually fixed in one position or removed). Obviously if fits under a scoop there is no prob but then it defeats the purpose of having one.

its an 11 metre rule in victoria

in Vic you have to have a clear and uninterrupted view of the ground 11 metres forward of the steering wheel when viewed from any position allowed by movement of the drivers seat.

There can't be any sharp protrusions, all edges have to be rounded and there no single openings larger than 4000 square mm, which is equivalent to a single hole 65 mm.

If it was standard on the vehicle it's ok.

thats off another website

and the author of that post is a cop in victoria

cheers

Well the problem is that every cop has a different interpretation of the law and what they think is wrong. Regardless of the law, they are gonna pull u up for it anyway. All the same I'm gonna run one, but I've got another bonnet with the A9X scoop so if I get hassled too much I'll run that.

Move to New Zealand and you can have whatever you want sticking out of the bonnet....... :D :D

The problem is the cops can do whatever they want. My view is it's best not to draw extra attention to yourself, whether the car is legal or not.

2Wild4U - Your probably right (i haven't checked officially) but the ones i've seen driving around (not many) are either fixed or they have removed the butterflies. These most likely have been fitted after rego as i haven't spoken to the owners. But i do know in other states that the butterflies must be fixed. I suppose that technically it is engine metal but what about other kinds of metal scoops on bonnets and air filters sticking through. You might be able to argue that if the butterflies are fixed then its only an air filter.

In Qld you can cut the bonnet but have to reinforce any braces you cut through.
Any scoop must be sealed between it and bonnet so no oil, water etc etc can come out of engine bay onto windscreen.

Then there is the maximum height allowed and no sharp edges.

I had a hornet scoop but kept the 14inch air cleaner base with a thick ring of flame proof foam on it which pushed up under the bonnet to seal it.

I never had an issue, or could have been just lucky.

Could you get away with an A9X scoop and have hilborn under it, 2TOUGH is street legal in N.S.W and that has a 350 with hilborn, and I dont think he cut the bonnet to get the hilborn through? A friend of mine told me that you could have a bug catcher in a A9X scoop and get away with it.... here's 2TOUGH

This is 100% correct.
Ive been through this many times with VASS engineers and the coppers..........

You blokes ought to research your car mod questions rather than speculate and bag coppers. Arm yourself with this info and drive around knowing your car is legal (or not).

Hotrodder is correct, the mods YiriSS mentioned are legal.

Well said LX406.

Guys.. In every state there is a technical info like of your relevant motor authority. In NSW its the RTA tech info line.

if you ask them a speific question, either by email or by phone, they can give you their answers based on the rules.

One thing to remeber is, it is THEIR opinion and the way that particular person reads the rules. Take their name, write down the date you spoke with them and the time, and ask them to post you the relevant sections marked. They are more than happy to do this. They did it for me regarding bonet scoops. Infact the help was EXCELLENT that i go.

This way you can be mroe sure that your getting the right advise the FIRST time...

Just remeber.. coppers are doing their job.. if they werent looking out for dangerous mods you can just imagine the deathtraps that would be driving around ( and trust me.. ive seen it recently in Korea and Thailand!).

Cheers.

In most states its illegal as road rubbush can get stuck in the butterflies and jam the throttle open.

If I was to bet whether I won the lottery or that [butterflies being jamemd open from random road rubbish] occuring in my lifetime.
I'd bet on the lottery every time =)
