My own theory on the WB Statesman is that a Series 1 came standard with a T350 and the T400 was the HD option. A series 2 came standard with a trimatic and a T400 was again the HD option.

they were all T350 up to mid 1982, then changed to trimatic from then onwards , with i guess? a T350 option (rare).
Also, late HZ statesman + HZ SLE came out T350 (M38), as well as some early SLE commodores.
So, the T400 was well and truly gone by then.
be careful when buying T350, as there are 3 different overall lengths with respect to the extension housing, the most common on in australia being the cable kickdown 6" ext (short)
there are also a few T350 3C "longs" with a 12" ext housing , which have vacumme modulated kickdown (good, i think!) that came out in 2WD C20 / C30 and post '79 cameros etc.
This box is sometimes confused with Turbo375
All take that STD GM Yoke., except T400 and T375

The Box could have been in the Torana, but certainly not standard.
If this box "did" come out of a Torana, Ask if you can buy the Crossmember and tailshaft too! This could save a lot of of hassle.

A well built trimatic is actually stronger than a TH350. If you want a tough auto use a TH400 (3L80), unless you want to run electronics then use a 4 speed TH400 (4L80E), although I doubt one of these would fit easily in a Torana. I'm certain a 6L80E wouldn't.

agree. but my 7/82 WB stato is tagged M40, so is Trimatic, so they must have deleted the T350 before august 1982.WB Statesman up to mid 1982 had TH350 and was coded on the BODY plate as M38. After that they were all Trimatic. TH350 replaced TH400 in HZ and VB in 1979 but was plated as M41 (in HZ anyway - not certain about coding for VB). No Holden after mid 1979 was fitted with a TH400 although there may have been a few C20 or C30 trucks sold new by GMH with one, however in these the TH400 was an M40. The TH350 finished in VH at the same time it finished in WB. All VK plus all Holden VL V8 were trimatic.

at least july 1982
June?
i think the last T400 rolled out approx in late 1978.

It did vary from factory to factory, so there is no exact date of changeover. Some factories may have had more transmissions stockpiled than others.
I've found that the change from TH400 to TH350 was around June '79 & the change from TH350 to Tri-Matic was completed around November '81.
There were no TH400 transmissions fitted to any Holdens after 1979. There were no TH350s fitted after 1982. Optional or otherwise. Whenever GM-H refers to an engine or transmission as being 'base' equipment, they actually mean what came as standard. The term 'base' was used regardless of whether there was any other option or not.
