Hey guys,

I need to replace the axle bearings in my car (The seal of one of them is stuff and she leaks pretty bad). I have a ford 9" with 28 spline axles, What i'm unsure on, is which bearings i need to get.

If Autobahn/repco didnt have 15yo's working there with no idea about cars, i would just take an axle down and get it sorted out that way....

I bought my diff 2nd hand, So im not sure what they used. I am guessing its either a F100 9" shortened for a falcon one shortened. But i got no idea what bearings they use? Or do they use Holden Bearings seeing i'm running holden brakes?

Ignore they white on the picture, its just one that i have in my photobucket that shows the bearing and i edited...

thats the shaft

Last question is, where is the best place to buy the bearings... Just bursons, repco or autobahn?

Anyway, hope i made sense... if i dont, i will try and clarify what you dont understand. LOL

I can't help with part nos etc but would advise to buy roller bearings to upgrade from the taper ones in the picture above.

ALX76, is this the kind of set-up your talking about? A tappered Roller bearing?

Thanks toranavista! That is what i am after! I'll measure it the best i can without a vernier tonight! LOL

So it can only really be Big ford or Small ford... Thats a relief... i was worried there was a heap of different types!

I can't tell from that pic but they look like the standard type, mine are a one piece bearing, there is no cone inserted into the housing end.

So its a case of knocking out the cone that sits in the housing, then just running the one piece bearing like yours pictured? If so that makes sense. No chance of shit getting in there and buggering up your bearings...

MRLXSS. By the looks of your axles, I'd say they are Holden bearings you have there presently and that the axle tubes on the 9" have been modified to accept those bearings and allow you to run standard Holden rear drum brake setup.

There is another shot of the axles i have...

While i'm sitting here at work, the more i think of it. They do seem to be the same size as the holden ones... definitely look the same anyway...

Axle bearing retaining plates a definitely Holden. I'm quietly confident that the bearings are Holden too.

I'll have to disagree. Tapered roller bearings are a better option than roller bearings.

tapered are allot better as they can handle sideways force, sealed one piece bearings are not designed for sideways force at all, and would be quite dangerous in a diff i would think. Any experts care to enlighten us any more?

Dont worry what type of car the bearings come from, just smash it off if you have to and on the side it will have a code on it. Dont go to supercheap , look up a bearing shop in the yellowpages and ask them if they can order you in some. Will probably be cheaper than supercheap as well.

hope this helps.
cheers julian

HI, They look like HQ bearings and retainer plates. A common 9 inch conversion
for a torana was a HQ tub with bearing housing welded to ford 9 inch housing.
Stick with tapered bearing, handles cornering loads better .

Thanks guys! Gonna try a bearing shop tomorrow.

I definitely want it to have strong sideways force, as i plan to enter skid-pan events and have some fun in the car at Supercruz and all those type of events.

Had a quick glance in the dark when i got home earlier... The bearings on the torana axles might be a bit smaller, but the light was shit and im not too sure... So as scottya said, could be hq..

HQ and Torana (1974 onwards) drum brake rear ends use the same bearing.

when you take axles down to diff shop to get the collars pressed off, they will tell you what bearing they are anyhow. You just cant bash them off as some one suggested because you will damage the axle bearing seat.

Matty,
They sure look like holden to me. take your axle to Bayswater bearings they know what they are doing and will be able to get you the right bearings at a bloody good price too. But as suggested above it would be better to take the axles to a brake specialist there is one in bayswater on scoresby rd on the right just after mountain hwy (can't remember what they are called) i took my axles to them they took the bearings off and put new ones on (can't remember what it cost me sorry)

You can actually do it yourself, well getting them off is easy if you have a skilled hand with an angle grinder but putting them back on is a little trickier. I have done it before but to one of my cars i didn't really care about to much, well you know what i mean, it wasn't the torana hey......
