Is it ok to drive with a filter out the bonnet in moderate raining conditions?
do k&n filters stop water getting in?
is it bad to have bits of water going down the carby?
Anyone know?
Thanks!

From what I have been told, the oil on the K & N is partly there to prevent water getting through, it came from a pretty reliable source & the person that told me has a K & N sticking thorugh his bonnet on his everyday car, and has had no problems, in saying that he only has the round filter with a chrome top section, having the K & N top section might be a bit different.

My everyday car has a K&N air filter sticking out the bonnet and hasn't had a problem yet.

I think if the engine is running it wouldnt be a problem.
Reason i say that is it's like having bodgey water injection.. the water coming in will get atomised and actually help cool the intake charge.
However... Depending on how it all sits... water can trickle into the engine while it's not running and rust the guts out of it... Trust me.. I'm speaking from bitter experience.
I'm not worried if i drive my car in the rain with water coming through the scoop, but i wouldnt EVER leave a "naked" air filter out the bonnet again.
Cheers.

Yeah I was also thinking it was like water injection if nothing else but it hadn't occured to me that cars aren't always out of the rain when they are turned off. Good point Tiny.
I think investing in a chrome top to use when the skies look questionable might be a good idea? I've put plastic bags over mate's filters when the car is parked in the rain at their request in the past...

LOL you weren't that far off. Yours just doesn't protrude the bonnet.

A mate used to have his aircleaner sticking out the bonnet of his SLR when it was a daily,no problems driving in the rain...he just used to cover the filter with a plastic bag when the car was parked outside in the rain while at work.
