Need some help finding the issue with my diff.

its a 9" 3.55 (new ford gears), has done 3000km's, mini spool, std axels. behind a 400hp chev. apparently it was rebuilt and only had a few k's on it when i got it.

its has a wine which gets louder the faster i go. when im going slow it has a light clunking/knocking noise rather then a wine, the slower i go the slower the clunk/knocking sound(hard to describe the sound).

the noises are coming from the middle of the diff, and not just one side.
Seems to be getting louder and louder the more i drive it.

using Castrol rear axel oil i think 70/80? from memory i think its got 2.1L, the required amount and it doesnt leak.

sounds like its got no oil and the metal is rubbing.... like you can hear the spiral gear turning the big gear drive.

still drives fine and lights both wheels up with no problems. the noise doesnt change when turning corners.

help is much appreciated, thanks!

Even though it's not leaking, have you checked the fluid level? Maybe it's shooting it out the breather or something.

If that's ok, maybe after 3,000km's the gears are wearing in or something? Good quality gears shouldn't be noisy though - as long as they are setup correctly.

Sorry I'm not much help - let us know what you find out.

I do not think you have much choice other than to remove the centre and have a look. Whatever is wrong will only get worse and cost more to repair.

My guess would be incorrectly setup crown to pinion and possible damage to the mini spool.

Could be the gears were not lapped correctly when diff was rebuilt common problem yes it will still drive fine but i would be taking it out and getting to the problem real quick.

Sounds to me like the pinion bearing has failed. Is the noise the same regardless of under power, coast, cruise ? If the noise goes away under one or more of those conditions it will be the gear setup, if its there all the time its bearings.

The mini spool wont fail but the pins holding it in the hemisphere can. This is usually a lot noisier than you describe.

As previously stated, get it out and find out what is wrong before it leaves you stranded and costs a heap more to fix.

P.S. A 9" takes 2.4L of oil.

I had similair thing
We Slammed the diff together at some stupid time at night the night before easternats and the Caps that hold the spool/centre in weren't tightened to specs came loose and it whined and made clunks luckily it didn't let go!! Ruined the gears etc! The next time we built it we did it with TIME!!
like everyone else said pull it out! May save you your car or someone else Glad we did!

Hi Nat. I had similar issues with my recently installed "reconditioned" 9 inch 3rd member. I took it to Steve at

Diff & Gearbox Industries
U2/ 280 Newmarket Rd Wilston 4051
(07) 3356 8397

It's behind the Newman's garage halfway between the Newmarket pub and the Holden dealership. He does top work and is very conscious of keeping costs down for us young Old Holden enthusiasts.

In my case, the previous owner of the diff had installed a non-collapsible collar for the pinion gear which didn't allow for adjustment. He stripped it down, installed a new collar, cleaned and lapped it for $130. Money well spent in my opinion.

Even if you take it down for him to have a look it's likely he'll have a fiddle and won't charge you if it's nothing serious. He really is a top bloke.

Cheers
Jim
