G'day All

Were any parts of the GMPA A9X Toranas light-weight and if so what parts and why?

I thought the panels and glass were light-weight?

This is a nice example :spoton:

I had heard that the metal is thinner but I didn't believe it. The other day I bought another bonnet and it is heaps lighter than my other bonnet (LX), so im guessing it's off an LH. I had heard that LHs had lighter weight bootlids and bonnets.

It seems that the metal itself is just thinner. You tap the LX bonnet and it sounds solid, you do the same to the LH one and it sounds like a coke can.

Thought the only lightweight ones were the Bob Forbes/Jane Le Mans hatches?

the bracing on the LH bonnets is doubleskinned, the LX ones were single skinned

Mmmm, so you know I took that photo and I do have HEAPS more but if I told you where it was I would have to kill you  or maybe I should say the owner would kill me.

Sorry but I can't break his confidence and that is why I blanked out the number plates.

That particular A9X has 430 HP and is absolutely a non-resto original.

Agreed, a very nice example! I can understand the owner being cautious about details..

The wheels look like V5 Simmons

To answer the original question, there were some light panels and glass around at the time. I've seen some of the glass brand new, it's a little thinner. As far as panels, Harry Firth had some light panels made from aluminium, but not for use in the group C cars.
The car in the pic is Bo Setons spare shell that was never raced and it was built into a road car at the end of it's usefullness as a race car. It's a very nice car. Yes, they are Simmons V5's, but the old style from the 70's, which are slightly different.

You have it round the wrong way, the lighter one is LX, LH and early LX are double skinned, the change came in with ADR27A to make the bonnets fold up easier in a crash.

Note how clean it is under the guards :spoton:
AND the rest of the under-carriage is like that.

Original spare tyre/rim and that Hatch Hutch has the part number on it.
The original rims are stored away.

Unfortunately it doesn't see the light of day much

Note in your "boot" pic that the Hatch Hutch has the part number on it as said and is one of the many pics I also took of this lovely car.

Thanks for not showing the full number plate as you well know, he values his privacy. :spoton:

Ahh thanks Mick. I was only going off what I was told the panels were off originally. Makes perfect sense though.

So the lightest combo would be a LX with early LH doors then.

As you probably know the GMPA A9Xs' didn't have the black outs but I think they're  :spoton:  with them or without them.

Cat is out of the bag since the AMC story. The aluminium 4 door panels was interesting to.
