I'd like to know the process they used to make them in the factory. That would be awesome if you could remake them from scratch. Pretty sure the guts of them is just the expanding high density foam (made from mixing two chemicals together). Presumably the only other part you need is a mould of some description.

The answer is out there.....somewhere!!!

Theres a couple of ways of the DIY Method, You could fill in the cracks with a form of filler and colour it, Or the way id do it, would be crank down to old Spotlight Get yourself some Vinyal $13,p/m from memorie, Then down to bunnings and get a jar of Selly's contact adhesive, its sorta like rubber glue that the motor trimmers use, Then pull the dash pad out and trim it yourself, Use a paint brush to apply the glue on both surfaces wait for it to go tacky then stick them down together.
Use mums hair dryer to heat and stretch the edges and to get a tighter fold on corners Cut lots of small wedges and idealy use a staple gun,

If your not confident at trimming then start lookin for another dash pad

goodluck either way :spoton:

I wouldn't use the Selleys contact cement, go to a trimmer and buy the high temp contact cement unless you want it to come appart again after the first hot day

i think i'll try that! cheers greenmachine so the vinyl should stretch around the corners and what not?
i should be able to get some sort of heat proof contact from bunnings shouldnt i??

Qwik Grip is what you want, same stuff they use for kitchen benches. Put on both pieces, let dry for half an hour, then put both bits together.

For some reason I thought they put the vinyl in the mould, then the expanding foam, but what you say would also work. Could make a mould the right shape from craftwood.

Ahhh Yella,, thats the stuff i had in mind, Or if you can get yourself to a trimmer they should be able to sell you a jar of the stuff fairly cheap, Ive got a mate that works at Exact fit in newton,

But quick grip is almost the same stuff, and when trying to stretch the vinyal Use your mums hair dryer to heat it, that helps it flex better, :spoton:

Hehe, vinyal is for geminis, if your going to the trouble of re-trimming it yourself go for some nice soft leather, lasts longer, looks better, and wont crack as easily, plus it will conform better to the shape of the mould i.e its more fexible :tease:

In my experience leather doesn't stretch much at all compared to vinyl :) When I trim things I usually use kwik grip and a staple gun on the unseen edges. Even kwik grip will come off on a hot day if it's the only thing holding the vinyl down. I like heat guns for stretching the vinyl and speeding up the 'half hour drying' to about 10 seconds too!

Mmm, interesting. I might start building up a mould, and have a play. Seems like these things are bit of a consumable. Might have to do the same for sun visors.

I am lucky to have no cracks in my dashpad on the LJ, so first thing i did was get a dash mat. I think these are good protection for the dash as a start. Also i use one of those metalic windows shades whenever the sun starts getting warm, so from like October - April. They only cost like $5. Maybe they look ugly but better than a split dash...

Vinyl stretches, more across than down though, unless you get the expensive stuff.
Don't get Spotlight vinyl, it's not UV treated and will fade and crack sooner than later.
Go to a Motor Trimmer supplier (UDA or Daleys) and get Marine Vinyl $20-30 per metre (1 or 2 metres would do @ 1200mm wide) and a can or two of spray adhesive. There are some marine vinyls that stretch both ways, try to get that stuff I think its aimed at motorbike/jetski seat covering.
When spraying the adhesive, let it tack well almost to the point where there is no stickiness left, this way you can lay down the vinyl lightly and if you stuff it up it will come off without removing all the glue laid down. When you are happy with where the vinyl is sitting rub it down with a cloth to force the cglued sides together.
Leather will stretch if worked properly but not much, plus you need to buy a complete hide at $300 plus!
