Sporting car club port pirie met on sunday.

this old girl is still circulating, just but still wins races.

my mate who's the mechanical genius that keeps her together won a grade, very few entries and all the big boys ventured to whyalla as it was the last meeting there before they hold the state titles.

me, the whole game has changed for me.

after the first heat its reverse grid positions for the next heat, us b graders are first out and the tracks mud threw being watered to handle all grades racing for that round. I end up now rear of field and have to fight my way threw the pack in mud.
edge of your seat stuff. one mistake and there goes my chances of winning the meeting for my grade.
yet i have to really push as i encounter some questionable defending of position.

there's two heats of my grade each round, the fast boys from the previous round in 1 heat. the slower times in the other.
guys win the slow heat, then get good grid position in the next round in the fast heat and in mud its easy to hold your position.

i win my race i end up rear of field in the fast heat, yet others with same points and wins in the slow heat get front row.

so she's gonna be hard to take out overall honours this year in meetings.

i did try something sneaky but it didn't work.
I had obliterated one race and the last 2 laps i slowed down to sneak across the line with the slowest time possible, thus get better grid position for the final round.

they stuck me at back anyway.

But there is a positive, I'm learning my craft, overtaking skills, being clean and fast and patient

we had dramas with the car, there's a nice article in this forum about improving reliability.
well it speaks of water pump, ours packed up sunday
it speaks of throttle cable
ours snapped on me in the my final heat after i had one of those starts from the rear of field you dream about.
it speaks of alternator.
the bearings are shot in ours.

we also had a fuel line split, it sucked shit in the Holley, causing drama's.

just about ripped the diff from the floor on the left side, we put fresh rubber on for the last round and well.......

our taco, the needle would hit 4 grand and go backwards.

got a very nasty new dent, fighting my way threw traffic i got up the inside of a cortina out of a corner and had the line to the next two corners, there's only room for one car threw these corners, he refused to budge. on the second corner he went in too hot on my outside and i threw my car into a slide for the corner and i hit him with my rear bumper fair and square in the middle of his drivers door,
he shouldn't of been where he was nor was he going to make the corner, even with pipe in the bumper the rear quarter panel creased a fair bit.

all in all I'm very contented with my driving, after last meet i had concerns but this meet i clearly see myself developing.
Ive finished seven heats this year won 4 of them.

two races ive had to battle from rear of field and only got points, another i got filled in with mud but forgot my tear offs and couldn't push.
the other my throttle cable snapped as the race was opening up for me.

yet last meet the handling of the car went crap, and we believe we might be getting only about 70% out of the 308 atm.

sounds like you are having a lot of fun mate....and that's what it is all about isn't it?? a suggestion for the tearoff prob...i carry a wet rag tucked under the rollcage in case i run out of tearoffs or rip all of them off at once (something i do all too often)....

it is all about fun, friendships and camaraderie :spoton:

cheers for the wet rag bit, i bend the first tear off's handle towards my helmet and practice going for it as i wait on the grid for the start.
that way im going to get at least 2 to work

I agree mate. It's such a good fun, relatively cheap way to get onto the track, it should be just about compulsory for guys my age in country SA :D

And I'll be at school in Adelaide, otherwise I'd be there.

I haven't raced since I was 15, so I wasn't a road going hoon at the time... But just having the opportunity to get it out of your system at the track has to be a good thing.

Seriously, you can get into the sport for less then a couple of grand if you know what you're doing... It only cost us about $1000 for a season of racing, including the car, with 2 drivers... Thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about car control.

one of my mates races an AMCA speedway cars and i was helping him put some tear offs on before a race ... this is how he does it ...

put the first one on and then fold the tab over the clip, then put the next one on with the tab on the other side of your helmet and then it will hold the first ones tab in place, and do the same for all of them alternating the tabs from side to side as you go and what it will do is mean you can only grab the top tab as it will be the only one out in the open ... all the rest are tucked under the one above them.

only down side is you need to be able to get the tear off from either side.

Sounds like a lot of fun, and congratulations on your results so far.
Good to see you running a Torana, how do they compare to the other cars ?

Good to see you running a Torana, how do they compare to the other cars ?

simple as with 78 and 79 group c racing, nothing is a similar package unless heavily modified.
for her just being a warm 308, with low gears, head in the boot and 14 inch tyres she out drives anything similar.
not as easy to drive as a commodore or falcon, but faster if your good enough.

very twitchy, has the ability to get pace off the raceline and seems more "rally" style drivable than anything not heavily modified.

but get tyre pressures wrong or suspension set up, she's nasty and just wants to spin out under power
