Lads. Is there a sure fire way to tell a supra from a celica box just by looking at it. Marking, numbers etc?
Cheers
Jim

Hi Jim,
I don't have an answer about markings or numbers,
But I do know this,
This is a Supra Oval case,

I have 2 in the shed,
1 goes,
The other is good for 5th and reverse as parts.
http://users.tpg.com.../gearboxes.html
There are several Pics on this page.
Image number 2,
Gearboxes Right to Left,
R154, Twin Turbo Supra
W5x Series, all look the same from out side, Differnet ratios,
Celica Steel case
Unknown.
Celica box or Steel Case as they are know as well
See image number Four
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Toyota used some of the same gearboxes for there supra's and there celicas.
The W5X series are the most common when putting in other cars. THey are cheap and very strong. These came in both celica's from 78-85 and supras from 82-90's.
But there are many differnt types, W55, 56, 57, 58 & 59, main dfference is the ratios.
And Toyta box with W55 (or 6,7,8,9 which ever u want) stamped on it is the right one.
Its the T50's and T40's that older celicas and corollas used that u want to stay away from. (they are fine up to 200hp.)
This site is good:
http://winterpalace..../gearcodes.html
NB: the V160 is their best box, 6-speed and will take wat ever u throw at it, only came out with there top line turbo last supra.
