Running Problem?

Was driving home last night in my LC/308/Trimatic, when the engine lost power and would slowly loose revs and die. I would pull over and start it again and then it smelled strongly of fuel (inside). This happened a total of 3 times that night and has happened to me once in the past as well.

Any ideas of what this could be?

Sounds like its flooding, the floats in Quaddies become porous and sink.

or the needle and seat could be sticking open allowing too much fuel in.

Or the secondary needle hanger is bent - holding one or both needles up.

Its got a holley 600 on it. So most likely just needs a tuning?

Each time its happened its been on a longish trip, does that help?

You can adjust the float levels on a holley with the motor running. Remove air cleaner. Locate the inspection bungs on the drivers side (opposite side to your cable/linkage)of the float bowls and remove. They look like flat blade screws 2/3rds up the side of the bowls. They are about 6mm across. Don't touch the little screws near by, they are the mixture screws.
Run the motor and fuel should just be lapping the threads of the hole. If fuel continues to run out, the float level is too high and would probably be causing your stalling. You can ajust the float levels running. On the top of the bowls there is a big flat blade screw with a 5/8"? nut directly under it. Loosen the locking screw about 1/2 - 3/4 of a turn (and hold in position with your screwdriver) and adjust the nut to obtain correct float level. Turning the nut clockwise will lower the float level. Turn the nut 1/4 of a turn at a time and let the motor run for 20 secs. or so after each 1/4 of a turn and see whats happening in the inspection hole. When you are happy with the fuel level just lapping the thread, hold the adjusting nut in position and tighten the lock screw. Refit inspection bungs and aircleaner. If you can't stop the fuel running out of either bowl you have a needle and seat or float issue.

Got mechanic to have a look, but he seems to think it is the electric fuel pump. Will take it out and inspect...
