Unless the 253 is red hot you dont need a 650 holley. A 465 Holley would be more than adequate for performance and dare I say it - economy.

And if it is a stock 253 that doesn't get pushed hard, he could get away with a 350 Holley.

And regardless of the size chosen, for daily drivers Holleys aren't always economy friendly.

A bucket of fuel with a hole in it may offer better economy.

I had a 253 with fueled with a 650 Holley and it was definately too much, it used to run fine until I tried to give it some gas.

I HAVE EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM, I HAVE AN LX WITH A 253 AND IT HAS A 650 HOLLEY.. I WAS PLANNING TO GET A 450 HOLLEY VERY SOON AS IM SPENDING ALOT OF MONEY ON PETROL, BUT, MY QUESTION IS, WOULD MY CAR GO SLOWER ONCE I PUT A SMALLER CARBY ON IT??? ALSO, IM PLANNING TO STROKE IT TO A 308 SO DO YOU THINK I SHOULD JUST LEAVE THE 650 ON THERE OR WOULD A SMALLER CARBY SUCH AS A 460 STILL BE BIG ENOUGH IF I STROKE IT?

650 would be fine on a 308, but my question is why do you want to stroke a 253? Why not just use a 308 block?

Because i was told that a 253 and a 308 had the same block but with a different stroke.. is this not right???

Later 253's in the VH Commodores had four barrel factory carbies which werent too bad - perhaps one of these would be more suitable?

Hi Guys.

NO it is not right. The 253 & 308 have the same stroke, but a different bore (3.625 vs 4.00). Problem is you can't bore a 253 block to 4.00" to make it a 308. You might as well just buy a 308 to start with.

The Q-Jet carby was factory fitted to ALL Blue 253 V8s, in the VC, VH & WB series cars.

Had a 465 vac sec holley on my 253 LX installed and tuned by Doug Chivas at Revesby many moons ago, a real nice carby that give good economy and performance.

Big blocks from the states used to run with 2 barrel carbies.

Good Dr, where these the same 780 CFM carbs as on the 308 with smaller jets, or smaller quadrajets? Would be interesting to know.

I had a VC with 4.2 and Quad. Also had a manual for the car but I'm not sure if it was a Holden or Gregory's manual - I remember comparing the carbs between 4.2 and 5.0. Venturi sizes were the same but jets and needles (primary and secondary) were different. Car ran fine with it. I did try a 465 too and it ran a lot harder but I think it sat a little higher due to having to use an adaptor and put it too close to the bonnet. Ended up going back to the Quad.

On my old 253 SL hatch I changed to a 350 Holley - got better power and economy over the 2 barrel Stromberg and was also better than the Commodore.

Thats cos a 650 Holley is waaaaaay tooooooooooooo largeeeeeeeeee for a 253 :)

Even a 600 Holley is a bit large unless the 253 is very hot.

But we gotta try these things in the never ending chase for more power lol

Cheers

I actually changed my inlet manifold as well to a redline, didnt have any clearance issues at all, cant remember now what power it made but combined with a HMHeaders extractors and dual 2inch from memory it went pretty hard

Back in mid 80s I had LH 253, mild cam redline manifold with 450 Holly vac
secondaries. With 4 speed and 2.78 LSD, was excellent, lots of grunt but good
on fuel if stay on primaries.

Running a 450Holley on my 5.2L.
Probably would benefit from larger, but with these fuel prices - who can afford to put the foot past halfway anymore anyway :)

The question about the 600 on the 253 losing power - probably find it'll increase performance dropping down the carby size O.o
