Hi Guys,
Wondering whether someone on here can give me some help. When I purchased my hatch it came with a reconditioned 253, all in pieces. The block has been decked so therefore there is no engine number. We have been in contact with the guy we bought it from who could not give us any info and we have also been in contact with the company that decked the block who do not keep any records. We have been in touch with Regency here in SA and they have said fit the engine to the vehicle and then submit to Regency for an inspection but I really don't want to do that if I don't have to. I have been told that maybe the block could be xrayed to show up the engine number - is this correct? If I can get the engine number can that number be restamped onto the block legally? If so by who? Any help would be appreciated
Cheers Loui

did the car come with rego papers or with old disk on windscreen? even if expired
then you should have the engine number that is recorded by trans sa
so if you have just reregister and transfer to your name, if there are no defect notices shouldn't be a problem
if you are worried about engine number have the block restamped with the number on rego but try and get stamp size similar to original and put an "R" at the end, I have one that has been done this way

Hi,
Thanks for the response limo. Unfortunately when I purchased the car it came with a 6 cylinder in it which was in it the last time it was registered. The previous owner had started restoring it and was going to convert it to a V8 - hence the reconditioned engine in pieces. I have been in contact with Trans SA who said there was no problem in putting the V8 in and it wouldn't have to go through an inspection. The only problem now is we don't have an engine number to register it with. Any other ideas anybody. I would really like to use this motor if possible as it has had heaps of work done to it eg bead blasted, new cam bearings, crank has been done to suit block. Also has new pistons, rings and bearings to suit and has been dummy assembled by the reconditioners.

I would be seeking advise from Trans SA in writing asking what you have to do to make the vehicle legit in that state. This is a common problem and I suspect all states have their own fix, ask first, have it in writing so that when what you have done is queried you can back it up and hopefully make life easier for yourself.

Hey Surfmaster,
Thanks for the advice. I will write to Trans SA as you suggested and hope that they do have a fix for the situation.

If you get stuck just buy another red 253 block and caps with a bore smaller than the new pistons. The block will cost you scrap value. Get it hot-tanked, bored and honed to suit the pistons and new welch plugs and cam bearings. Will cost a little but may be easier than buggering around with a new engine number.

The vehicle will only need a "vehicle ID check", not a full roadworthy inspection unless it has been modified.
They will issue you with a new engine number. you will need to have that number stamped into the block before they will issue you with the paper to enable you to go and register it.
They may ask you for evidence of the reconditioning, so take what ever paper work & or pictures you may have.
You can ring the Vehicle Identity section or the Vehicle standards section to confirm this, just remember that they will be expecting it to be fairly stock to meet emission ADR27A laws.
Craig.

Hi guys,
With the vehicle ID check, does that mean the motor would have to be in the car? It is still in pieces at the moment & I don't want to put it back together & put it in the car & then not be able to get it registered. Seeing as I am in Murray Bridge I might contact the local Regency guy & quiz him as to whether I have any hope of being issued with a new engine number & getting it registered

The engine will need to be in the car, so it can be issued a new engine number & that it will be registered to that car straight away.
You'll need to arrange it with the local police, & expect a long day, as they need to sight the engine, run a computer check, then contact the section that will supply a new number, they'll also run a check.
Then once issued, you'll need to stamp it in the block, they then need to sight it again, then they'll issue you with a completed MR29 ID form that you can take to motor reg.
Your local DTEI Inspector does roadworthy inspections, & isn't involved in the Identity section unless he needs to validate a vehicle.
