having some trouble sourcing oversize piston for my 161

It appears that the company who did manufacture these went under this year.

Im getting the engine work done through HM/GEM on the nsw central coast so they're trying to source a set first before boring.

If anyone could recommend a different supplier let me know

Also he ran it past me as to how far i wanted to bore ie.060" - .120" (167 - 173)! I didnt think you could go over say .080" unless the 161's have a very cylinder wall.

I'm willing to bet you can get it to 192...I had a 179 + .122 . It sort of makes sense that all the blocks are the same..its just the bore size thats different....one way to be sure is drill a few different dead blocks thru the front of number 1 bore and see what the difference is.....I have a 161 I can check for you.

dont go and destroy a block just get the reconditioner to sonic test the bores and that will tell you how thick they still are and whether they will handle a =080 rebore

just an update to tracking down pistons....getting a set of +60 thou endurotech pistons sent up from vic

Also info on boring the red 6 blocks...spoke to the old fella who runs the shop and he said that he's bored a 202 out +120 thou (216).

It seems that when the blocks were originally cast they must have the same water jacket area only smaller pot sizes...so maybe the 138 (2250) could end up with the pistons of a 202

Hi Guys.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but many of the castings are different. The only ones that share the same bore castings are 179, 186 & 202, these can all be bored to 3.625" + 0.060" safely. Good blocks (i.e those with nicely centred casting cores) can be bored further.

Some 149 blocks won't even bore to stock 161 size. Likewise some 161 blocks won't go out to 173 size. Most 173s will go to stock 179, but not to 186. As piquet said, get the block sonically tested before boring.

Dr Terry.

Your not sorry at all :tease:

Core shift is the reason I got my HP fitted with liners...because by the time you ultrasonically test it and run around to find another block if you need to ...its just easy to get your block bored and lined...then you get the bore thickness you need and you aren't stuck with 60's metallurgy.

I can still test the theory on my coffee table block (161) and the handgrenade I built at christmas (202)

dont think I'll rush out and buy .120" over and risk stuffing a 2600s block

got the .060" over today....last set that they could source between nsw & vic
