Whacked a gilmore belt drive on my motor, when i tightn the belt it tends to pull/twist the alternator, therefore the belt runs right at the front of the alternator pulley and rubs on the bit that is to stop the belt slipping off.
So i put a washer in between the alternator bracket and the engine block to space it out a little to compensate for the twist and then the belt after being tightened slips straight to the back and runs on the back of the alternator pulley.

Anyone else played with these belt drives, any ideas. It just seems that the alternator brackets are a little weak.

Cheers

Les

Don't wanna seem picky but best you learn the correct terminology :)
Gilmer not Gilmore.

Sorry I can't help you with the problem though.

Cheers

How tight do you have the belt? You should be able to hand twist it through 90 degrees at the centre between the pulleys.

I ran a setup on my turbo for quite a few years with no problems whatsoever. I seem to recall that you run two alternator brackets if flexing is really the issue.

A neighbour had the alternator of his 351 XD torn off twice by the gilmer belt - and all set up nicely.
We think that the alternator brackets weren't straight enough.
Grab another bracket, as Howard said and give it a go, and make sure you've got the belt loose enough.

Grant..

Cheers guys, I grabbed an adjustable shifter, put it on the belt and was able to turn it through a 90 degree angle quite easily. :D Nah Not really, lol. I could turn the belt to about an 80 - 85 degree angle, it was close but could tell it wasn't quite 90. Will back it off a little tomorrow and also see if i can find another bracket somewhere in the shed to whack on aswell.

Cheers

I have seen Gilmers on ebay for $175.00 I cant say if they are genuine or a knock off replica? The price varies too on short to long water pump. Not sure what the difference is but there must be one.

Type Gilmer into ebay right now and you will see what I mean.

Sorry Herne, The missus must have been watching Gilmore girls.

Backed the belt off a tiny bit and i've had it running for a fair while, while i was stuffing around with the dellortos and it seems to be right. Couldn't find another bracket but i think i will put one on when i can find it.

Cheers guys, Thanks for the help.

What are the advantages of this setup, as I don't know much about them but am interested.
Cheers Chris.

Apart from the fact that they sound nice and look good (IMO) I am not sure what they do. The manufacturer states less chance of throwing a fan belt! Not really an issue that I have seen. I am really interested in how they dress the engine bay and little else if I am to be honest.

I guess what they really do is rob a minor percentage of horsepower given that they are generally a 1.5" belt.
I just remembered they also contribute to faster wear of the alternator bearings....Probably other componenets too?

If anybody has more techo info on what these do I would be pleased to hear it but lets not put these in the rocket science category if we can help it :) lol

Cheers

Yeah they do sound good and they also look a lot better than the original belt and pulleys, The only thing i thought was that there is less chance of the belt slipping. There is definately a lot more load on the alternator bearings as its spaced out further and has to be tighter, well it seems that way.
