How much of a headache is it to fit a T56 6slot into a rana?

I had enquired aboout this before (through Dellow Conversions) and they said that it wont fit in the Torana tunnel, you would need to cut it out and weld in a larger trans tunnel

so it would be quite a nightmare if you ask me

Can and has been done, Mal wood do a diffent rear section that makes them fit into a std torana tunnell, but the cost i think was around 7k for the whole convertion including one of there boxes. So if you get your own round $3,000ish if i remember right.

^ Yeah, what he said! :D

Well, I know the T56 in my Torana didn't require the tunnel to be cut.

Have a chat to Max (hatchssv8) as he is presently fitting one in his hatch. I didn't fit mine, I was too lazy (and most likely lacked the skill required too!) and just paid someone to fit it for me! :spoton:

I'm currently in the process of fitting my modified T56. It still hangs down lower than the chassis rails (at this stage) and will need some tunnel modification to fit as i don't want it to sit that low and rub/vibrate on the tunnel plus the yoke is working up hill etc.
cheers
Mark

Hey Growla, what has been modified to your T56. What model car is it from.
I am fitting a VY/Z unit to my Torana. It needs mods, some I have completed, others I still need to begin. I thought the QLD option was too prohibitive in cosst so I am giving it a go myself.

I have posted previously regarding this modification with pics. Do a search.

Note that I will be running a Holden V8 and not a Chev!

Cheers, Max

Now tha tyou have read that ask any questions and I will try to answer.

There are some more mods required, not hard at all, just a case of measure twice, modify once.

Oh, and I will end up running a 5.0litre clutch and flywheel.

hatchssv, I have an LX SL/R with LS1 out of a VY including Bearbox. The gearbox was modified and rebuilt by Mal Wood. However on first attempt to install motor and gearbox it appears to be sitting to low. I have CAE cross member for the commodore setup (which i was initially was going to run but the shifter was way too far back) and it's to shallow for the modified box. I will order Mals later this week I can't get this one sorted.

When i click on the link, my pc freezes.
I also am using the 304.
Will the 304 fly wheel & clutch do the job?
I understand the tunnel will need mods, but that is not a concern.
Where does the shifter sit in the tunnel? Is it too far back?
Which side does the speedo drive exit the box? P/S?
What is the difference between Mr Woods rear extension & stock?
Cheers, Col.

1. Not sure which link you are referring to
2. Standard 5.0 l type flywheel yes. There is also a 5.7 Holden flywheel (as used in VS GTS) but is used in cunjuction with the pull type diaphram. I am using the standard flywheel, hd clutch cover but pressure plate with 26 spline to suit the trans. I haveny decided exactly what brand so cannot give you a part number.
3. I anticipate only mods to the tunnel near the shifter entry to floor.
4. VY/Z shifter is way too far back. remove OE remote shifter and fit an aftermarket one. then you can use a l shaped intermidiate lever to bring the gear lever to original position. ( I can take a pic for you)
5. Speed sensor (electrical connection only) is on the left from memory. If you are not changing speedometer to electronic, I cant help you. There are solutions out there though.
6. Mr. Woods would be best to answer that one.

Can you detail where your tunnel mods are/will be?
Cheers, Max

I'me a boilermaker, modifying the trans tunnel is a simple job. Making a x-member isn't a drama.

I thought i had best ask some Qs before i bought a box.

Thanks for the input.

An early model Camaro T56 rear case is required to use a speedo cable.

the t56 into torana has also been done local near me. they def chopped alot of trans tunnel and refab there own, this needs to be done to get the drive line angles correct. be careful there are some differences between the t56`s, whether its from camaro, holden 5.7 and chev ls1 5.7. they also need some wiring for a solenoid that prevents selecting reverse while driving. mal wood is the absolute guru when it comes to them, have a conversation with him before buying or attempting putting one in he`s lots of help.

Gday all

Apologies for digging up an old thread - but i came across this thread while doing research on the in's and out's of installing a t56 behind a 304.

I've noticed that the box shown in this thread: http://www.gmh-toran.......15265&st=25
differs from those in the ls1 commodores.

Has anyone here installed a commodore t56 into a LH/X torana before? Any first hand knowledge would greatly be appreciated as there is a lot of heresay about, especially regarding whether it will or will not require tunnel mods.

I'm trying to decide whether or not to sell my R154 (which took me months to find!) and pick up a t56 my buddy has offered me for a good price :spoton:

Cheers,
Clint

Ok, the photos are of a Mal Wood conversion to a Holden V8 and they took off every bump and lug on the gearbox to help with clearance and they did it without modification to the tunnel. The back housing has been changed to a Camaro/ mustang, as the commodore gearbox is too long.
On the hand I have put a modified T56 gearbox behind a LS1 which sits higher in the engine bay and had to cut the tunnel.
Cheers
Mark

I have 2 friends in Canberra which are putting T56 /LS2 into there hatches, both have the Camaro extension housings. They both vary a bit, because one uses Castle engine mounts and the other uses a different brand(can't remember) but the engine sits further forward and lower in one and has sump issues, the other is higher and back and the sump clears better. But the bottom line is the gearbox hangs down too low in both! Best to cut the tunnel not much, but it will sick up about 35mm above the floor for perfect alignment. The Camaro extension housing stops you from having to cut through the brace in the floor near the seats and the shifter is in the standard location.
