Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone out there have any troubles with there speedo. Lately mine has started to play up. Basically what it does is this. When I get into the car of a morning or when the car has been sitting for a while(cooled right down) I start her up and drive off. Now the crazy thing is the speedo jumps all over the place and sometimes stops working. After I have done maybe 5-10 km's it starts to work fine and then have no further problems. What do you think it could be.

Most likely the driving gear on the output shaft from the transmission is worn, will display your symptoms exactly, as things expand slightly the gear stops slipping. This requires the extension housing on the trans to be removed and a new one fitted(its plastic)
If you are lucky it may be only the driven gear on the end of the speedo cable that is worn. One thing for sure, it will only get worse.
Pull speedo cable from gear box and inspect gear on the end, if it looks very worn, replacing it may get you out of trouble.
Using a mirror and torch, you can visually inspect the driving gear, look or feel for wear in the centre.

Either as devilsadvocate said above ^ or it could be a one of three other things...
1) Circlip has fallen off the inside extention housing (pretty common) - the only time the speedo will work is when the driven gear comes into contact with the speedo cables plastic gear (driven gear can slide up and down the shaft without the circlip).

2) Broken inner speedo cable - even if it's broken, the speedo can work intermitantly if the ends of the cable strands make enough contact to spin.

3) Speedo input hole is chewed out - only seen this once before but it can happen...

First,
Check that the cable is still attached properly at the back of the speedo.
If not it you will also be hearing a clicking noise.

Hmmm funny you should mention that, there is a soft clicking noise when it is happening. If it's at the back of the speedo why would it happen when it's cold. Would it be the same deal, expanding plastic etc. Is it a big deal to get to the back of the speedo.

It's not hard - LH/LX I presume? There's a clip that needs to be pushed in right where the speedo cable joins the speedo (it's part of the outer cable). Push it in and release the cable slowly - it may take a few goes but it's easiest done with the binnacle taken partially out to gain better access to it. LC/LJ cables screw in diagonally at the base of the speedo.

the clicking noise you hear may well be just the cogs engaging/whatever inside the speedo every time the cable starts to turn from rest to speed as the gears inside the gearbox engage. Loose cable at back of speedo is a possibility, yet unless you have been poking around there cant see that it would have become detached, and as you say - its difficult to see how this may be improve as the car warms up, but worth putting into the list of possibles.
I take it that the odometer stops turning when the speedo dies as well?

usualy this is from the cable being unlubed...pull the speedo cable out and squirt some graphite powder down there. what might be happening is the inner cable is grabbing, then the gearbox end keeps turning and winds it up more and more, putting more and more pressure on the inner cable, then it lets go, fly's around, and grabs again when it looses tension...

The ^ wouldnt explain how the speedo stops working all together for considerable periods, there would be an almighty wind up of the cable after 10mins or so!
Nevertheless friction inside the cable could be responsible for causing the gears to slip and checking that the inside of the cable has some lubrication may be benificial, but perhaps just delay the final onset of the prob.
Cant say that Ive seen this prob, my three UC's all had the worn out drive gear to display the symptoms, from memory when looking at the cables, somehow they managed to have a fine layer of oil on them that appeared to be transmission oil.

Could be the seal between the gear in the g/box is stuffed and the cable is full of oil. You will end up with it inside the car eventually. Happened to me, same symptons. Cheers Jim
