Just wondering whats the difference between these type of engines
i ask because my mate keeps saying to my other mate that his VS 5L engine is better than the VN 5L engine....i think he might be referring to more Kw etc...

i didnt think there would be much difference

i didnt think there was a difference.my motor is out of a 94 model vq statesman and still only had 165kw then.what year is vs.if there was a difference it could only be 20kw any way.you could get nearly this with a good exhaust and take the fan off.i would by from 94 on as 89/90 is a little old.either way it will be a little power plant with any 5 litre in it.

VN were 165kw from the factory
VS series 2 introduced cold air induction giving an extra 3kw
Half way through the VR range the strker option on HSV was introduced, all blocks after that point were built to allow them to be stroked. Basically theres no difference in a stock VN to VS 304. VT however were 179kw from the factory standard and had a roller cam. They also had sequential injection, requiring a different distributer. They are a much smoother engine.

I believe the series 3 VS ute and VT 5ltrs have a roller cam instead of flat tappet cam and you can fit a 355 crank in the later blocks without internal block relieving. I also heared the VN heads are better though but whether this is fact or fiction, I'm not sure.

Hi Guys.

Yes, the 5.0 V8 from VN to VS was virtually unchanged except for the cold air intake added for VSII & III, as well as the reliefs in the block for VR onwards to allow for the stroker crank if needed.

As REDA9X has said, the VTI 5.0 had a different distributor for the sequential injection as well as a roller cam. These engines were also fitted to VSIII from Nov 1998 onwards. Note, not all VSIII had them, only Nov 1998 on.

Just to add to Terry's and other comments, you'll pick the pre "stroker" introduction by the 5.0L casting on the side. Once the stroker was introduced (with rod reliefs) the casting boss is blank.
