If i were to change a Opel box to a M20 what would have to be changed? Are the tailshafts the same?and would the console have to be changed to a LJ?linkages?I have the original Opel in at the moment but have been advised to maybe put a M20 in (opel makes noise).I would like to know what modifications would have to be made ,if any,for this. Thanks :D

My Opel also makes noise and will eventualy be rebuilt.

I would leave the Opel and have it repaired if you have a genuine car.

"Cheers"

tailshaft is same
need M20 linkages
can use LC console but you need to remount slightly to rhs of current position
and you may need to grind a bit out underneath on lhs, there is a curved section below gearstick that may need to be enlarged
also clutchplate is different

Hi 1971LCGTR.

To change from an Opel 4-speed to an Aussie 4-speed, you will need

Gearbox with linkages, bellhousing etc.
Clutch pate
Tailshaft & yoke
Crossmember
Speedo cable

The console is different but you can just move the original one, slightly.

By the way, it's only a small point, but an Opel is also an M20, so it's best to refer to the newer gearbox as an 'Aussie 4-speed'.

Dr Terry.

I see limo says the tailshafts are the same, but Dr Terry says they are not. Just wondering which one is correct, and if there is a difference, what it is?

Maybe the lengths of the tailshaft is different. Thanks for all your thoughts ,ithought maybe i would change to a aussie 4 speed because they are cheaper to rebuild but this gearbox does belong to the car ,so maybe keeping it and one day rebuilding it could be a better option (on the 12th of never)it makes a whine ing sound and going by previous posts a rebuild could cost $900.Cheers Paul.

The dr is right the tailsharft will need changing, but i would stick with the original items if you are keeping the car, and if you do decide to swap over i have plent of complete set ups i would swap in a jiffy.

cheers john

The Opel tailshaft is about 4 inches longer due to the Opel gearbox being much shorter than an Aussie 4 speed box , and therefore cannot be interchanged .
You must use a tailshaft out of a LC - LJ , factory automatic car or 3 speed car ( auto or manual ) .These tailshafts are all the same length as an aussie 4 speed one.
I hope this clears things up for you .

Regards LC870 .

Thanks. I thought that may have been the case.
