bought an lx sedan, 161 auto, unreg, got motor running, hose disconnected from disc brake booster, brakes worked slightly, connected up hose, pedal goes straight to floor.

was just out fluid on rear brakes, topped up. same. will bleed on w/end
after engine is off, after 10-20 seconds pedal slowly comes back up.

where to start?

car had cancelled reg, would still be current otherwise.
young guy said brakes were like that for awhile. shit! lucky something left to buy.
not as long as the clunking in the steering though, which after inspection was 2 cotter pins out far enough the shaft was spinning under load. after refitting them it was then obvious the coupling was broken and those safety pins do actually let you turn the car when the coupling breaks, but the pins have worn very loose, dont think they would of lasted much longer.

diff is clunking to, next after brakes.

Did you work out what it was?
Could be the valve where the vaccum hose attaches?

Booster sounds O.K. to me so far.
You first have to work on the pedal height.
Check for loose wheel bearings, adjust brakes, then look at hydraulics.

If the booster was stuffed, you would have a really Stiff pedal... The Booster normal creates that cushy feeling... Sounds a bit weird though... Definitely work looking at and pulling apart

found a uc booster that should be o/k, removed about 5yrs ago, was working then.
not sure if it will bolt on though.
will try vacuum lines first.

try on w/end.

I wouldn't touch the booster yet.

The pedal is meant to drop a bit when you start the engine, that is the vacuum assist working.

I would be changing the Master Cylinder before the Booster as well...

made some time to change the booster since it is the only part I sourced, fixed problem.

not bothered with bleeding brakes properly now, I can start the car and shift it without running into anything in the back yard.
probably go the HQ disks, but lots to do before I'm worried about that.

a new/reco master cylinder is on the shopping list.

thanks for the replies, had never seen pedal go straight to floor without touching it before.

had never seen pedal go straight to floor without touching it before.

Now it makes sense.
Glad you got it sorted.
