I'm not 100% but it sounds like a job for a pedestal drill and a fraction drill set...cut it off flush with the head, file it, centre punch it, drill a small pilot hole then keep going out until the sides of the stud are thin enough to collapse with a screwdriver or scribe (or other more suitable tool)

So this is an early (pre HQ/LJ) type head?
i've heard the studs are a bit sus if you run a big cam and heavy springs, need to replace them all with screw in studs if you want to do it properly, this means head off and probably take it to an engine builder.
Good luck!

Replace them all with screw in studs.

I doubt you will be able to find any press in studs available.

When I snapped an inlet stud in Echuca in 2004, we could only find 7, so the back 7 on my head are new and the front 5 are the originals (eg. waiting to die)

Thanks guys

Just got it out tonight. Using FastEHHolden advice, but what i did is cut stud flush, centre punched, drilled through with small drill bit then slowly went up to 1/4". Taped a thread inside of stud, and used a bolt and spaces (eg. nuts, socket etc) and tightened to pull out. Similar like a puller process. Finally came out!!
What a bast@rd of a job!

Now to smack the new stud in!!

Do you know why it snapped?

I had this happen to my 179 about 30mins into its first vision of life! The reason mine did it was because my pushrods were too long. If you pull your rocker cover off and spin the motor over by hand, watch the components of your rocker gear for connection. Are you running roller rockers? I am and i noticed that the rocker met the stud and proceeded to bend it every time she came up and down.

Solution was to use 202 pushrods! In the event that you have a 202 and need shorter pushrods, i believe that Crow make them, also, apparently some chev rods fit nicely!

Just thought i would ask if you knew why you snapped a stud!!

thanks for that

Its a 202 with yella terra head and roller rockers. The pushrods are from a 186.
We did check this when they meet, seems to be ok.

Broke at the start of the thread, maybe just a weak spot in this stud?

Are 186 and 202 pushrods the same length?

If so, i require shorter pushrods? i was told crow cams make some 10thou shorter?

no they are not..if you have a 202 head then you need 202 push rods..if have a 186/179 head then you need 186/179 pushrods.

It would appear you have a 186 head
