I've never seen or heard about these before, so can anyone tell me why? What purpose?

Iv seen one for sale before on a XU1 tank at a swapmeet..

Hi Guys.
It's just the vinyl trim cover for an XU-1 fuel tank.
AFIAK all XU-1S left the factory with one, otherwise the tank would just be an ugly lump of bare metal in poking out of the boot floor.
